North Adams- Mayor John Barrett III took out nomination papers on July 19 for election to a 12th two-year mayoral term, said City Clerk Marilyn Gomeau.
Barrett is the longest-serving mayor in the state. He was first inaugurated as the city’s mayor in January 1984 after winning a fall 1983 election. During the 2003 election, Barrett ran unopposed for the first time in 20 years. As of noon on July 20, no potential mayoral challengers had taken out nomination papers, Gomeau said.
City Council Election Update
City Councilor Alan Marden of 558 West Main St. took out nomination papers for a 10th city council term on July 19. City council terms are two-year terms, and all city council terms expire concurrently, except in specific situations such as the resignation or death of a city councilor.
City Councilor Richard Alcombright of 40 Williams St. took out nomination papers on July 12 and City Councilor Gailanne Cariddi of 100 Galvin Road took out the papers on July 13. As of noon on July 20, neither incumbent had returned their papers.
Former Clarksburg Selectman Andrew Etman of 83 Franklin St. took out nomination papers for a city council term on July 14, according to information provided by Gomeau. Etman had not returned the papers as of noon on July 20.
City Councilor Ronald Boucher of 645 Barbour St. had not returned his nomination papers as of noon on July 20.
The deadline to return all nomination papers for the November 2005 election is 5 p.m. Aug. 9, said Gomeau.
Incumbent councilors Marie Harpin of 15 Rock St., Clark Billings of 206 Corinth St., William Donovan of 74 Chestnut St., Robert Moulton Jr. of 11362 Massachusetts Ave., and Michael Bloom of 176 Bradley St. have returned their nomination papers.
City council challenger Richard Harlow of 243 Union St. # 207 has also returned nomination papers.
When nomination papers are returned, all voter signatures appearing on the papers must be confirmed, Gomeau said
Potential challengers for city council seats who had not returned nomination papers as of noon on July 20 include Eric Buddington of 68 Union St., Kelly Lee of 243 Union St. #106, and Nikolai Rudd of 73 North St.. Brian Flagg of 42 Liberty St.. has reportedly said that he will not return nomination papers acquired earlier this year and will not seek a city council term.
North Adams School Committee Election Update
North Adams Public Schools School Committee member Heather Boulger of 8 Williams St. has returned nomination papers while school committee member John Hockridge of 1020 Mohawk Trail had not returned his papers as of noon on July 20. City school committee member Mark Moulton of 215 North St. had not taken out nomination papers as of noon on July 20.
Northern Berkshire Vocational Regional School District Update
Alcombright also took out nomination papers for election to another term on the Northern Berkshire Vocational Regional School District School Committee, as did NBVRSD School Committee member Paul Gigliotti of 43 Frederick St.. Neither Alcombright nor Gigliotti had returned those papers as of noon on July 20.
Gomeau noted that the city has not had a preliminary election in many years. In order for a preliminary election to occur, three mayoral candidates or 19 city council candidates, or both, would have to emerge by the Aug. 9 deadline.
