WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Former governor and Williamstown resident Jane Swift has endorsed Republican candidate Bill Gunn for the 1st Massachusetts District.
Gunn, a 48-year-old Ware roofing contractor, is hoping to oust Democrat John W. Olver in November. He's a registered Republican running on tea party principles, including repealing the federal health-care reform bill and limited government.
In her letter, Swift, who ran unsuccessfully against Olver in 1996, explained her reasons for endorsing Gunn.
To my friends in the Massachusetts first congressional district:
I am proud to endorse Bill Gunn in his run to become your representative in the United States Congress. As our economy continues to sputter and government spending grows, we need a fiscal conservative in Congress more than ever before.
Just as all families must tighten their belts in tough times, we expect our elected representatives to spend our hard earned tax dollars wisely. Bill Gunn will be a solid vote for common sense fiscal policies.
As our small businesses try to weather the economic storm, Bill Gunn understands the need to limit regulation and lower taxes.
Bill Gunn has my vote for Congress and I hope you will consider giving him yours as well on November 2nd.

I am happy you are engaged in the issues facing our country and state.
Our Mr. Olver does not consider you his consituent if you disagree with him. That is arrogant and not what a true representative does.
Many times Bill tried to speak to Mr. Olver, here in the state and in DC. He felt his voice was not being heard. Can you hear him now? And that of those who support him?
Bill Gunn has been holding dozens of open town halls through his campaign. He has been on the radio numerous times and spoken at many, many area functions. He is passionate about being your voice (yes even representing your views).
Be sure to vote in November no matter whom you support.
Why does the republican party waste money supporting these joke candidates? There wasn't any serious candidate willing to run in the gigantic 1st congressional district? When people like Giftos and Kinnaman get behind these jokers they hurt real republicans who would like to see some changes in Massachusetts politics. Instead we get terrible candidates and continue to get weaker.
Well 'Pal'...what will do it? Dialogue is good, facts are great. In my opinion inane, unsubstantiated comments are worthless. So step up to the plate, pal. Please offer some intelligent discourse as to 1) how Mr Gunn is a joke and 2) how Mr Gunn's candidacy is a joke. I eagerly await your response.
Olver is a poster child for term limits. He exceeded his limit a long time ago. Olver continues to vote the party line like the spineless puppet he always has been. Time for a change.
Jane Swift did the right thing. Bill Gunn is our battering ramm through big government, which is destroying a once free people's opportunity to create wealth and prosperity.
The animosity and claim of Bill Gunn's arrest is striking. It was political representation and non-violent. Not unlike other peaceful protestors of Democratic ideology.
Bill GUNN with courage voiced opposition to the health-care bill in DC because Rep. Olver would not entertain constituent input at 6 Town Halls within the 1st Dist.. Olver had certified mail notice of each. I have in writing Olver reason, "because there is no bill." we wanted to impact the bill Olver wanted and did shut our voice out of the debate. There is a bill Rep. Olver, and you should be concerned about the BILL GUNN and the bill.
It should be noted that opposition to the health-care bill at the time of arrest was about 50%. Mass. elected a Republican Senator in Brown months later with opinion at 55%. Today opposition stands at 65% (+/-). Bill GUNN is ahead of the opposition as being voiced by the general public.
Bill GUNN is campaigning as a citizen candidate and is doing all the activities that any other candidate would do, and much more (20 +/- town halls / meetings already). Please don't fault Mr. GUNN for outnumbering Olver in lawn sign distributions, I feel vindicated that Olver's campaign is as disorganized as is his undertanding of his constituents.
GUNN'a stance on fiscal sanity and constitutional adherence is appropriated and inspirational. A true courageous citizen candidate challenging the establishment,
GO GUNN GO!
There hasn't been a clearer choice than the candidates in this year's election.
The incumbent believes the government should do for you. They goverment knows best and will take your money in the form of taxes, and offer some of it back to you with strings attached.
Mr. Michael Engle, believes the government is not doing enough in our lives.
Citizen candidate, Bill Gunn believes in the free market and consitutional principles. He stand for individual feedom and the oppotunity for each person to succeed in their endeavors.
Learn about each candidate - this is going to be an important election.
Bill Gunn is a nut and a complete fringe candidate. Why didn't Jane Swift run again if she is so concerned about conservative principles. Why did she let snake oil salesman Mitt Romney come in from Utah and run her out of town on a rail without so much as a whimper. If Jane Swift is endorsing someone, you better believe I'm voting for their opponent.
Dear 'Joke'.
If it's not too much trouble please stop taking the easy way out like 'Pal' and 'Waste'. How about some credible backup to your statement that 'Bill Gunn is a nut'? And as for 'fringe candidate', if Mr Olver is a shining example of a 'normal/centrist candidate'....well laddy, I think I'll stick with the 'fringe'. But thanks for the warning!
The cities of Pittsfield and North Adams will hold municipal elections for mayor, city council and school committee in 2015
