Szczepaniak Promises To Keep Officials Accountable
By: Patrick Ronan On: 11:18PM / Wednesday May 26, 2010
DALTON, Mass. — To prove how accessible he is to the public, Tom Szczepaniak announced his cell phone number to a crowd of about 100 people at the Dalton American Legion.
The Lanesborough native, who views himself as a "working man's candidate," officially launched his campaign to become the state representative of the 2nd Berkshire District on Wednesday night. The 43-year-old said he's ready to bring his work boots to Boston.
Szczepaniak is the owner of Variety Trucking & Demolition.
"We need a business-minded person with deep, local government experience," he said. "Not some greenhorn, and not another lawyer."
Szczepaniak will square off against fellow Democrats Paul Mark, of Hancock, and latecomer to the race Noreen Surinar of Middlefield, in the Sept. 14 primary. The victor will then take on the Republican primary winner and independent Stefan G. Racz of Buckland in November's general election.
Tom Szczepaniak wants to get rid of Evacuation Day and Bunker Hill Day.
Currently in his third term as a Dalton selectman and president of the Berkshire County Selectmen's Association, Szczepaniak said he'd draw on his wide-ranging experience in local government and his commitment to the people. If elected, he promised to keep legislators honest in an attempt to control spending.
To make state officials more accountable, he suggested the elimination of two Suffolk County holidays given annually to government offices.
"We need to get rid of Evacuation Day and Bunker Hill Day, and save $5 million dollars a year," he said.
He also came down on the amount of money spent on lawyers by state agencies.
"No more gold-plated handouts for outside counsel — $145 million for private lawyers and in the public defenders office, $35 million. Not happening [if I'm elected]," he said. "Why are we lavishing money on pricey law firms when each agency has its own legal staff?"
Other platforms included in his speech:
• To prevent casinos from coming to Massachusetts
• To stop micromanaging the judicial branch through the budgeting process
• To support the green energy movement
• To shift more focus on public schools and public transportation
About 100 supporters attended Szczepaniak's campaign kick-off on Wednesday at the Dalton American Legion.

As chairman of the Dalton Senior Center Feasibility Committee, Szczepaniak was instrumental in securing an override for the creation of a new senior center. The groundbreaking for the new building will be on June 7.
"It's a huge accomplishment," he said. "We've been working on that for about 12 years. Our elders will finally have a place that they deserve."
The 2nd Berkshire District consists of 22 towns in Berkshire, Franklin and Hampshire counties. Denis E. Guyer, of Dalton, will not run for re-election after three terms.

Is the "Report Abuse on This Page" feature for this article a coincidence?
I ask because on the Topix forums (for the Eagle), people are always posting inflamatory remarks about Mr. Szczepaniak. Granted, that's not new for Topix at all, but those posts were very specific and apparrently confirmed by multiple posters (IPs were from different cities).
And then all of those inflamtory posts were removed. And this has happened for Mr. S on more than one occassion.
Does Mr. S have that sort of "pull" with iBerkshires as well (and maybe he's just very litigious and you are making a smart business decision not to get sued), or is this just a coincidental timing of that feature?
We don't allow name calling, inflammatory remarks or unconfirmed rumors (We don't consider multiple anonymous posts as 'confirmation').
Mr. Szczepaniak has no extra pull with us; he will get treated like every other person we write about. We encourage respectful, open and critical dialogue about issues - not personalities.
Postings on other stories must be pre-approved. We're trying the blog format to allow immediate posting; if it's abused too much, we'll change it.
I feel that iBerkshires is off to a good start by keeping their blogs clean, fair & balanced. Unlike Topix where some people tend to become haters posting things that do not pertain to the topic at hand. Let us all keep in mind that holding grudges with an ax to grind is simply unproductive.

Thank you iBerkshires!
I sincerely hope you plan on holding your own reporting to the same standards you expect from individuals posting feedback comments. Only time will tell.
Well, I don't plan on calling anybody names, making inflammatory remarks or restating a lot unconfirmed rumors. If I do, please call me on it.
Discussing whether people are contradicting themselves, noting when they have flip-flopped or critiquing statements, such as "Contradiction" below, is highly encouraged. I just ask everyone to be civil.

Thank you iBerkshires!
He is already contradicting himself. He talks about cutting the budget for the public defenders office and then talks about not micromanaging the judiciary branch through the budget. So which one is it?
I attended this event, Mr. Szczepaniak DID not contradict himself.
However, he did say he would like to see more money going towards the Public Defender's offices & cut the (hired by the State) private lawyers $145 million dollar budget in an attempt to save our State at least $60 million dollars in the process. He believes there is no reason to hire outside attorneys spending money we do not have because the State has their own legal staff!
Hope this clarifies your question.
And how is that not a contradiction? He is proposing manipulating the budget to shape the judiciary branch to be more in line with his personal feelings. That is an example of micromanaging the judiciary through the budget, so it either is a contradiction or the guys completely clueless. Either way it looks horrible.
Looking at that picture, there is no way that was 100 people. Let's assume there was actually 70 going by the picture and how exaggerations work. That is a pathetic turnout for an 8 year selectman in his hometown. And he's already going negative so he must not have anything to say about himself. I feel sorry for this guy.
Apparently you have not attended many kick off campaigns, this was an excellent turn out!
It's too bad you weren't there to hear what he had to say, it wasn't negative. I encourage you to attend one of his public forums, you will be surprised to hear his ideas & WHY he feels the way he does!
""We need a business-minded person ..." - Szczepaniak
I'm a Republican, but I can't help but read that line and think about how George W Bush bragged while campaigning that he would be the only president with an MBA degree.
Obviously I was having a little fun with the insincere comments made by politicians, and that Mr. Szepaniak is no exception.
For example, Mr. Szepaniak moves trash for a living. How on God's Heaven and Earth is that being a "business man?".
Just becaue he owns the trucks that move the trash doesn NOT make him qualified to run a real business. He does the same work as many other unskilled and uneducated laborers.
I will respect your inaccuracy of what you THINK his business provides & leave you with this;
Mr. Szczepaniak is a brilliant business man & it was his vision & ideas that allowed that business to grow in a very large capacity, in which you are apparently unaware of.
Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
You have no idea what you are talking about, Tom built his business on his own, with NO FAMILY help. Get your facts straight and stop wasting our time!
