WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —  There were three motor vehicle accidents in town over the weekend, sending three people to North Adams Regional Hospital.

The first, at about 3:42 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, involved three cars at the Adams Road and Main Street intersection, in front of the Colonial Shopping Center.

According to police, a 2003 Toyota Celica driven by Henry Farnham, 84, of Hancock, pulled out of Adams Road to head west on Main in front of an eastbound 2002 Buick Rendezvous being operated by Kenneth Dugal, 24, for the town of Florida.

The Buick struck the Celica in the driver's side door, spinning it into a 2008 Toyota Tacoma driven by Stephanie Goldberg-Luger, 19, of Minneapolis, who also was heading east.

Both the Celica and Buick were towed from the scene with moderate damage; Farnham and two passengers in the Tacoma were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Farnham was cited for a state highway traffic violation.

Two hours later, police responded to a two-car crash at the intersection of Main and Cole Avenue in which both drivers were allegedly operating under the influence.

According to police, a 1998 Ford Ranger operated by Dennis St. Pierre, 50, of Williamstown, was turning left onto Cole Avenue from the eastbound lane of Main Street at about 5:34 when he was struck by in the passenger side by a westbound 2005 Buick LaCrosse.

The driver of the Buick, William Wheeler, 85, of Williamstown, was issued a criminal complaint for a first offense OUI; St. Pierre was arrested on a second offense OUI. Wheeler was also taken to NARH with neck and back pain.

Both vehicles suffered heavy front-end damage and were towed from the scene.

The third incident involved a single car and a deer. According to police, Amanda Burnham, 25, of Williamstown was northbound on Syndicate Road at about 7:18 a.m. on Sunday when she swerved to avoid a deer and lost control of her car.

The 2005 Hyundai she was operating struck a utility pole on the east side of the road. Burnham was not injured by the car was heavily damaged on the passenger side and had to be towed away.

WNYT Channel 13 is reporting that a Pittsfield man connected to dozen break-ins around the county, Southern Vermont and eastern New York over the past six months was arrested in Lenox because of "a very observant witness."

Lenox Police Chief Stephen O'Brien told the station on Sunday that Stefan Veremko, 28, was charged with a daytime break in, receiving stolen property and possession of ammunition without a permit for an incident last Wednesday
 
Veremko broke into a building on East Street in Lenox last Wednesday afternoon, according to police, and was spotted
jumping into a gray Hyundai Elantra and fleeing the scene. The witness jotted down the license plate, followed the car until it turned down a dead-end street, then noted the license plate was switched when it re-emerged.

The car was seized Friday and police found evidence of recent burglaries in his home.

Veremko was to be arraigned in Southern Berkshire District Court on Monday. The Lenox Police Department will display evidence seized a later date. Anyone who's been victim of a breaking and entering into their home and suspect that Lenox may have some property should contact their local police department.

According to his MySpace page, Veremko is a student at BCC (where he made honors) and an assistant supervisor at Hillcrest Educational Centers.

Updated Nov. 17, 2009, at 2:21 p.m.: The meeting with state police has been postponed to Dec. 2 because of an unexpected scheduling conflict.

The Board of Selectmen has scheduled a meeting with the state police on Wednesday, Nov. 18, beginning at 6:30 because of recent break-ins.

The state police provide the town with police coverage and has recently published a request for the public's assistance in trying to gather information on these crimes.

Richmond Sets Meeting Over Break-Ins

Over the past six weeks, nearly a dozen burglaries and attempted burglaries have occurred in the two towns. While there's no evidence the perpetrator's been the same in all the incidents, one suspect has been indentified as being at or near several of the more recent ones.

The suspect is described as wearing a black, hooded sweat shirt, sneakers and baggy jeans. He may be alone or working with someone in a vehicle. The majority of the break-ins have been during the day; at least one has occurred at night.

A number of homeowners have reported someone similar in description to the suspect as knocking on doors and claiming to have lost a dog. Police say this may be a method of casing the house to see if someone's home.

Update on 11/15/2009 at 8:25 p.m.: According to the Stamford Crime Watch, the North Adams Police say they know who the individual is, but do not have enough evidence to arrest him. He reportedly has a girlfriend who acts as a spotter. She is described as attractive, thin, about 5-foot-5 and weighs approximately 115 pounds, with brown shoulder-length hair.
