Helpful Hints for Walkers
The following simple tips will help make your walking experience more enjoyable.
- If you have not been exercising regularly, consult your physician before starting.
- Start slowly and build up your pace gradually to give your body time to adjust and prevent injury.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially when it is hot.
- Be consistent, try to work up to accumulating 30 minutes or more most days of the week.
- Wear comfortable shoes designed for walking. (thick, flexible soles with good arch support are best)
- Listen to your body's signals. Problems can develop if you put in too much mileage too soon. If you feel pain, slow down and/or reduce your mileage.
- Keep safety in mind and walk with a buddy. Always let someone know where you are going and carry a cell phone.
- Simple stretches done at the end of your walk will keep your muscles flexible and help to prevent injuries.
- Have FUN, enjoy the fresh air and sense of well being!
