We are half through the NFL season and it's time to grade performances thus far. Some teams got a better grade than expected while some have just plain failed. I am listing them according to their standings within their respective division. How did your team do?

AFC East

New England Patriots: Still the class of this division. A healthy Tom Brady shows why he is still the premier QB in this league (Sorry Peyton). Record: 6-2  Grade: A

New York Jets: Good QB play but way too inconsistent to truly be contenders. With a new head coach and a rookie QB it will take them awhile to get going. Record 4-4  Grade: B-minus

Miami Dolphins: They were division champs last year. Looks like the wildcat has run its course. Record 3-5  Grade: C

Buffalo Bills: These guys are a train wreck. They don't have a valid QB and watch out because T.O. will start whining very soon! Record 3-5 Grade: C

AFC North

Cincinnati Bengals: Awesome. Carson Palmer is back and Ochocinco is playing very well. The defense is one of the best in football. Record: 6-2  Grade: A

Pittsburgh Steelers: Defending champs are showing why. Excellent QB play and a swarming defense. They will make a strong case to repeat as champs. Record: 6-2  Grade: A

Baltimore Ravens: Still boast a ferocious defense and their second year QB (Joe Falcco) has the offense clicking.  Their division is tough and they will miss the playoffs because of it.  Record: 4-4  Grade: B-minus

Cleveland Browns: Ridiculous. They change QBs week to week and their coach has no grasp on what it takes to win at this level. Record:  1-7  Grade: F

AFC South

Indianapolis Colts: Best QB in the league and a rookie head coach who has been with the team a long time and knows how to win. Record: 8-0  Grade: A-plus

Houston Texans: They should be winning more games by now. Head coach (Gary Kubiak) has been there awhile and should have more consistency with a good QB like Matt Schaub. Record: 5-4 Grade: C

Jacksonville Jaguars: Another disappointing team. No consistency at QB and defense is sub par. Head coach (Jack Del Rio) may be fired at season's end if they don't start winning. Record: 4-4  Grade: C-minus

Tennessee Titans: Another train wreck. AFC Championship game last year but HORRIBLE this year. Record: 2-6 Grade: F

AFC West

Denver Broncos: The surprise of the NFL by starting 6-0. Offseason controversy and new head coach should have had these guys rebuilding. Two losses in a row keep them from getting an A-plus. Record: 6-2  Grade: A

San Diego Chargers: Excellent QB but their running game is not what it used to be. Plus their head coach (Norv Turner) is still getting chances when he should be an offensive coordinator instead.  Record: 5-3  Grade: B-minus

Oakland Raiders: I don't even know how they have won two games. Horrible QB, horrible owner and a bully for a head coach. Record: 2-6  Grade: F

Kansas City Chiefs: Based their future on a one year wonder QB and a rookie head coach. They traded their best player (Tony Gonzales) and released their best running back (Larry Johnson).  Record: 1-7  Grade: F

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys: This is one of my surprises. Excellent QB play. Ridiculous receivers. Effective head coach. Record: 6-2  Grade: A

New York Giants: Two weeks ago they would have gotten an A. They have gotten away from their core game – running the football!  Record: 5-4  Grade: B-minus

Philadelphia Eagles: Consistent QB play and a very good defense. Still not convinced they can be a contender though. Record: 5-3 Grade: B-minus

Washington Redskins: Once again they are a perennial disappointment. Horrible owner and a QB who should not be playing at this level.  Record: 2-6  Grade: F

NFC North

Minnesota Vikings: Excellent QB play from Brett Favre and one of the best Ds in football. Record: 7-1  Grade: A

Green Bay Packers: Too inconsistent in all phases of the game. Plus they just thought to a winless team badly. Record: 4-4  Grade: D

Chicago Bears: Traded for the best arm in football but didn’t get him anyone to throw to. Defense is not as good as they should be.  Record: 4-4 Grade: D

Detroit Lions: Same old, same old. Horrible. Record: 1-7 Grade: F

NFC South

New Orleans Saints: QB (Drew Brees) will rival Peyton Manning for League MVP. Awesome receivers and a very good defense. Record: 8-0 Grade: A-plus

Atlanta Falcons: Very good QB play and a good defense. Need more consistency from their run game. Record: 5-3   Grade: B

Carolina Panthers: Disappointment. They have pinned their hopes again on an aging, overrated QB and their defense is sub par. Head coach (John Fox) better watch out or he will looking for another job. Record: 3-5  Grade: D

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: They may have finally found their QB in Josh Freeman but the rest of the team is horrible. Record: 1-7  Grade: F

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals: Last year's NFC champs and the only reason they will their division this year is because the rest of the teams are not very good. This is the only division where the leader doesn't get an A.  Record: 5-3 Grade: C

San Francisco 49'ers: Too inconsistent even in a weak division. Record: 3-5 Grade: D

Seattle Seahawks: Aging QB and a horrible defense. Record: 3-5  Grade: D

St. Louis Rams: The whole team is horrible from QB to defense. Oh wait – the running game is OK with Steven Jackson. Record:  1-7 Grade: F

Lanesborough Town Meeting to Vote Budget, Bylaws & Vehicle Purchases

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Tuesday's annual town meeting includes a $14 million operating budget, new short-term rentals, accessory dwelling units and sign bylaws, and free cash article appropriations.

Voters will gather at Lanesborough Elementary School on June 9 at 6 p.m. to decide on 20 warrant articles.

The fiscal 2027 budget is up a little over 10 percent. Some of the main increases are the Mount Greylock Regional School District and McCann Technical School: the McCann assessment is up more than 30 percent based on factors including enrollment and the school renovation project, and Mount Greylock's is up 11 percent.

Article 11 is for the town to vote to approve from free cash the sum of $16,298.48 for the McCann Technical School roof and window replacement project so as not to impact the budget. Article 3 is  appropriate $7,586,284 for Mount Greylock Regional School assessment.

Another notable increase was in life and health insurance, showing an increase of about 26 percent.

Ambulance Director Jen Weber is planning 24-hour coverage, which means more staff and a hike in her budget. One of the articles asks the town to appropriate $234,100 to operate the Ambulance Enterprise Fund for salaries and expenses.

Many town departments are looking for new vehicles. The Fire Department is looking to replace its outdated 1996 fire engine. There are two articles related to the truck at a total of $813,366. Article 12 would transfer $225,000 from free cash into the Fire Truck Stabilization Fund; Article 13 would transfer $605,000 from the fund and authorize the borrowing of $208,366.08.

The total includes a $100,000 contingency cost to cover any additional costs if a 2026 model-year chassis cannot be secured before new emissions standards go into effect in 2027.

The board at its last meeting moved the $225,000 transfer to come before the borrowing article, changing the stabilization number. If the $225,000 is not voted on, then they will amend the next article's number on the floor, subtracting the $225,000. This shows the borrowing number significantly lower.

Article 17 asks for the transfer of $80,000 from free cash to replace a police cruiser.

Police Chief Rob Derksen's aim is to replace one vehicle every other year, meaning the oldest vehicle gets replaced about every 10 years.

He stressed that if delayed this year, the town may have to double up in a future year to get back on schedule, and that paying later usually costs more. The article will ask for $80,000 from free cash, the vehicles used to be funded by the BHRD.

Lastly, the Highway Department is looking to replace a 2014 International dump truck that will be a total of $330,000 and will take two to three years to receive.

Money will be used from last year's approval of $250,000 from free cash for the replacement of a 2012 highway front-end loader that was underspent $49,261. Town meeting is being asked to approve  a transfer of $53,274.85 from free cash and the use of $227,464 from funds from the Sale of Town Real Estate to fund the balance.

Other free cash proposals include $1,200 to purchase software to support tracking and ongoing maintenance schedules of town-owned vehicles; $42,000 for the replacement of the Highway Department's storage shed roof, $200,000 to reduce the tax levy.
