PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Berkshire Enterprises will offer a Free Business Breakfast Forum Staying Connected Even When You’re Too Busy on Friday November 6th from 7:30-9:00 AM. The program will be a discussion of ways participants have found to stay connected with customers, suppliers, business contacts, and others.

The forum will be lead by Steve Fogel, Program Director of Berkshire Enterprises. It will be held in the Third Floor Board Room at One Fenn Street in Pittsfield.

As the pace of business speeds up and as businesses become more and more focused on efficiencies the need to maintain effective communications has increased as time needed to communicate has shrunk. Business people need to find ways to communicate information effectively. They also have to develop strategies and find time to maintain relationships so that customers, suppliers, and associates don’t become strangers.

Steve Fogel, Program Director of Berkshire Enterprises says, “Often relationships that companies have form a strategic advantage. Relationships need to be nurtured and expanded. These relationships can make owning a small business more enjoyable and more profitable.” The forum is appropriate for owners and managers of small businesses as well as those who have experiences they feel would be beneficial to small business owners.

Berkshire Enterprises Business Breakfast Forums have been held since 2001. The Forums are made possible through the generous support from Greylock Federal Credit Union, Legacy Banks, Berkshire Bank, TD Banknorth, and the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank in space provided by CompuWorks. The forums include an active discussion of techniques that work and can be implemented easily. A light breakfast is included. Anyone who is interested in attending should register emailing Steve Fogel at sfogel@berkshireenterprises.com or by 413-236-2141. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
