PITTSFIELD, Mass. - October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and this years’ national theme is “Be a Super Hero Adopt a Shelter Dog”, because every superhero needs a sidekick and what better friend than a shelter dog.

To celebrate the event for each shelter dog adoption during October, the new owner and canine companion will receive a free custom pet-id tag and a chance to win a basket of staff selected dog products. A special sale of $2.00 off dog products in stock and $1.00 off bones and bully-sticks is available to all dog lovers during the month of October.

Lisa Corbett, Canine Services Manager at BHS, says “during October we want to remind the public that we keep adoptable animals for as long as it takes to find them the right home.” Not only does BHS provide shelter, food and medical care for these dogs while they wait for someone to adopt them, the dedicated staff gives each resident canine quality time daily that includes exercise, play, training, enrichment and lots of love.

Knowledgeable adoption counselors will guide you through the process of matching the right canine with you and your family.

The shelter is open Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 4pm, Thursday evenings 5-8pm, and Sundays 1-4pm. Available dogs can also be viewed on the webpage at www.berkshirehumane.org.

The Berkshire Humane Society has placed over 15,000 homeless animals into new loving homes since 1992; they also offer free humane education visits and tours for area school children, a community pet-food bank for economically distressed pet owners, and works in cooperation with The Elizabeth Freeman Center to provide foster care assistance for the pets of women in crisis through PetSafe.

BHS receives no public funding and relies on memberships and donations to continue to help animals and people. In 2007, BHS adopted out 784 homeless animals from Berkshire County and its neighboring borders. The shelter is open Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 4pm, Thursday evenings 5-8pm, and Sundays 1-4pm. The shelter closes at noon on the last Wednesday of each month for staff meetings. The phone number is 413-447-7878 and website is www.berkshirehumane.org.

Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting a smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settle neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m.

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation.

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call.

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said.

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
