AMHERST, Mass. -  Despite a rainy day, Williams (4-0 NESCAC) maintained their undefeated record in the NESCAC putting together their best team performance of the year to cruise past Amherst (2-3 NESCAC) Saturday afternoon. The offense truly capitalized in the circle hitting net each half while defense aggressively protected their own throughout the competition with numerous exceptional saves by junior goalie Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, CT).

Only 10:22 into the first period, Eph sophomore Lucy Rollins (Rye, NY) had a point-blank finish guiding the ball past Amherst first-year goalie Emily Vitale after receiving a pass by sophomore Meera Sivalingam (Philadelphia, PA) breaking along the left goal line. Williams’ offense and defense combined to maintain the lead for the duration of the competition preventing the Lord Jeffs from converting their 7 penalty corners and 6 shots into goals. Williams finished out the period with 2 penalty corners and 3 shots.

Despite the lead, the Ephs’ weren’t lulled into complacency when the game resumed at the start of the second, but continued to compete aggressively to counter the Lord Jeffs’ increasing intensity. With 13:12 minutes remaining, Williams doubled their lead when a persistent Margie Fulton (Wellesley) finished in front of the net in traffic off a pass by senior captain Anne de Saint Phalle (Bronxville, NY). The Ephs kept Amherst on their heels shooting 9 shots to Amherst’s 3. Both teams ended the half with 3 penalty corner opportunities.

Coach Alix Barrale felt that her team put forth their best group effort of the year. “Things really came together for us, and we are beginning to reach that point where success is a collective undertaking.”

Throughout the game, de Saint Phalle put in a strong forward line consistently creating opportunities for Williams. Likewise, Fulton executed and was unrelenting in the circle against Amherst defenders. On the other end, Eph defense showed no weak points as Amherst attempted to penetrate and score. In conjunction with her teammates, Tulla proved to be an impermeable barrier for the Ephs.

Amherst first-year goalie Emily Vitale finished the 70 minute game with 8 saves and 2 goals allowed. Tulla also put in the full 70 minutes ending with 5 saves and no goals allowed.

Williams will face Trinity at home this Wednesday evening at 6:30PM.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
