WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – On a day when the skies were clear, the wind was calm, and the air was warm, the Williams Men’s Golf Team captured the 2009 Williams Invitational in style, taking the title by ten strokes over the nearest competitors.

Jack Killea 2011 came out of the gate firing with a scintillating 6 under par 29 on the front side that included two eagles, matched with a 38 on the back-side to shoot a 67, the second lowest score of the tournament. His 137 total (70-67) was enough to place second individually, only behind Jeff Santora of Salem State who shot two impressive rounds of 69 and 66 for a 135 total.

Jack found much support from his compatriots, as Jake Wagner 2011 bounced back from a 75 on Saturday for a very solid 68. Chris Valle 2012 followed suit with a 73 of his own, giving him a 143 total (70-73), his strongest showing as an Eph so far. Both Jake and Chris finished tied for sixth individually. First Year Wyatt Sparks held his own in the fifth spot his first tournament in the Williams purple and gold with a 147 total (73-74). He shot a solid 74 today, that included a hole out for eagle on the par 4 10th.

Opening tournament stalwart, Bob Camp 2011 was steady with rounds of 75-75 for a 150 total, but he admittedly made a couple of mental mistakes that cost him several strokes.

The Williams “B” team also finished very strong today, coming in fifth place and proving that the Williams Men’s Golf team is one of the deepest in the NESCAC. First Year Jack Ervasti followed up his 70 with a 76 today for an impressive T-11th place finish with a 146 total. First Year Ryan Brand also had a strong showing, shooting a 72 today for a 152 total. Veterans Siwol Chang 2012 and Drew Murray 2011 both had solid showings with 153 (77-76) and 152 (73-79) totals, respectively. Mario Mastromarino was steady all weekend with two rounds of 78 for a 156 total.

Coach Pohle seemed elated and encouraged with the performance of his team after today’s final round. “I am extremely pleased with the efforts of all of our players over the two days,” he said. “We are arriving as the team that I thought we would be at Williams this season. Our veteran players are stepping up their games and the first year players are making great contributions very early in the season. This can only make us a better team down the road, given how close they are with each other on and off the golf course.”

“We had discussed earlier in the season how important it was for us to engage in positive reinforcement of each other, especially on the golf course, and it was neat to see the players gathering around the last couple of holes to cheer on the finishing players,” added Coach Pohle.

With the win, the Williams Men’s Golf Team hopes to carry some momentum into next weekend’s Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury, and eventually in the NESCAC Championship that will be held in Williamstown in two weeks.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
