The government's issued controversial new guidelines stating that women shouldn't get annual mammograms until age 50, rather than age 40.

Bascom Lodge atop Mount Greylock welcomes Paul Rapp, a specialist in copyright laws for the creative sector, on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 7. He

The Grooove, a teen-led concert series, will end the summer with a hard-core show featuring Dressed in Red, Warsynium, Heal These Wounds and Enigmatic Heart. Performances are at Mass MoCA, Club B-10 on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets available at the door and from the MoCA box office at 413-662-2111 or www.myspace.com/thegrooovecafe.

  

"Elements" will be held at the North Adams Artists' Co-Operative Gallery at 33 Main St. from Aug. 26 through Sept. 20, with an opening reception on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. The NAACO gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 to 6 and on Sundays from 11 to 4.


DownStreet Art Thursday, the monthly celebration of the arts in town returns, on Aug. 27 with an evening of free performances, gallery openings, and activities throughout the downtown area. Events run on the streets and inside galleries from 6 to 9 p.m. Businesses will stay open late, and free DownStreet Art Passports will offer discounts and deals at participating restaurants, shops, and other sites. On Thursday, Aug. 27, the Redroom, Main Street Stage’s popular cabaret series, will run in conjunction with DownStreet Art. After the galleries close, make your way to 57 Main for an evening of mingling, sketching, performance and surprises. Doors open at 8; show begins at 9. Also on Thursday, at 8:30, in the courtyard or Club B-10, depending on the weather, Mass MoCA hosts a "Labyrinth Singalong." The 1986 fantasy stars David Bowie. Information: 413-662-2111 or Mass MoCA.

  

The North Adams Farmers' Market continues this Saturday with fresh produce from 8 to 12:30 p.m. in the municipal parking lot at the corner of Marshall and Center streets. Backyard farmers are welcome to sell their produce as well. Call 413-664-6180 for more information.

 

On Saturday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. in the pavilion or in Club B-10, depending on the weather, Mass MoCA hosts Balthrop, Alalabama, a coordination of music and art. Call 413-662-2111 for tickets.

 

The sixth annual Autumn Arts and Craft Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 to 3 on Main Street. Crafters and artists are encouraged to join the festivities. Works must be handmade by the vendor. Those interested in participating should call Sharon Leary at 664-5404 or Rod Bunt at 664-6180 for an application.


The annual North Adams Open Studios will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18. Local artists are invited to participate. Tourists, art patrons and members of the community flock to the exhibits and walk the streets of the city to enjoy food, art and other displays each year.
