Renoir's Girl With A Fan Takes Center Stage

Print Story | Email Story
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Pierre-Auguste Renoir's engaging painting, Girl with a Fan, will be the focus of the next Looking at Lunchtime Talk on Thursday, June 11, at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Sarah Lees, associate curator of European art, will lead this gallery talk at 12:30 pm.

This talk is free with paid gallery admission.

At first glance, Renoir's Girl with a Fan seems to be the type of appealing depiction of a lovely young woman typical of the artist's work. On further examination, however, the painting begins to provoke numerous questions. It is difficult to say whether it is a portrait of a specific person or a generalized depiction of feminine beauty, or to determine where the figure is situated in space and how all the elements of the picture fit together. Lees will discuss these and other intriguing details during her gallery talk.

The series continues on Thursday, July 9, when Jay Clarke, Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, will look at selections from the Manton Collection. The talks take place at 12:30 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talks. Looking at Lunchtime Talks are free with paid gallery admission.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (open daily in July and August). Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May. Williamstown Elementary Principal Making Plans to Use New Math Position

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williamstown Elementary School's principal last week told the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee that the best use of an additional $120,000 in the fiscal year 2027 budget is to hire a math interventionist for the school.

Benjamin Torres on Wednesday gave the board an update on the school with a focus on the need to address instruction in mathematics.

Those concerns prompted a request from the WES School Council to include the full-time math interventionist position in the FY27 budget.

School councils are committees of staff and community members in each building of a regional school district that are charged with assessing and advocating for the needs of individual schools.

Although funding for the position was not included in what district administrators characterized as a "level services" budget that it sent to both member towns, some Williamstown parents took their case directly to town meeting, which voted to amend the town's assessment to the district, adding the additional $120,000 to cover salary and benefits for new position.

Torres last week reminded the School Committee of the arguments he made for an interventionist when he presented the School Council's report back in February.

"My goal is to highlight the amazing growth we've seen with our students and the amazing work being done by our teachers, but also highlight there's a small group of students who are not closing the gaps quickly enough to be prepared to be successful at the upcoming grade level," Torres said. "This is why the School Council has been advocating not just for an interventionist but for a more systematic approach when it comes to interventions."
