Williams Men's Golf Round 2 Palamountain Invitational

Saratoga Springs, NY – The Williams Men’s Golf Team concluded a disappointing weekend, as they finished 10th at the Palamountain Invitational today at McGregor Golf Links.

With a 2nd round 345 team total today, the Ephs finished with a two day total of 677, which dropped them into the 10th spot after finishing day one in 6th place. The weather was more benevolent than yesterday for the golfers, but the Ephs continued to struggle and find consistency down the stretch.

“We have all the excuses to fall back on regarding our performance in the spring's first event of the season,” proclaimed Coach Rick Pohle, “But it still boils down to the fact that we are under achieving as a team and as individuals right now and we've got to turn things around quickly.”

“I am most disappointed that we had the 3rd worst score for today's round in the field and that two teams with only 4 players (Manhattanville and Amherst) posted a better team score than we did today, both of whom we had beaten in round one. We have nowhere to go but up right now," expressed Pohle.

Three of the four teams that qualified for the NESCAC championship that will be held in two weeks were in attendance at the tournament, including Williams. Hamilton and Middlebury, the two other teams in attendance, had strong second round showings today, as they finished 2nd and 4th, respectively.

“Williams’ two day total of 677 was one on the highest totals in recent memory, but I think we can make the necessary changes to start moving in the right direction - hopefully in the next couple of weeks, especially with the NESCAC championship coming up,” indicated Coach Pohle, “but we definitely will make significant moves for our next season. I have enough confidence in the ability of the current players to begin the process."

Williams next competes at home against Middlebury College in a two-day event this weekend. Last year, a simulated Ryder Cup format was used with a match play format that created a different competitive atmosphere. However, as Coach Pohle states, "We are changing the competition to medal play to help our players improve their focus on stroke play scoring as we head into the NESCAC Championship at the end of the month."

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
