PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Nominations are being accepted for the 2009 Dr. David B. Kagan Awards for Outstanding Voluntarism. Each year since the late 1970's, the Rotary Club of Pittsfield has recognized members of the community who have greatly contributed their time and talents to the many religious and human service organizations throughout central Berkshire County.

The Dr. David B. Kagan Award was the concept of Dr. Chris Mamonas, a former Pittsfield physician who wanted to remember his friend, colleague and fellow Rotarian as well as a past president of the club for the many wonderful contributions he made during his lifetime here in Pittsfield.

Dr. Kagan's life of giving truly exemplified the Judeo-Christian ethic that is the very embodiment of the award created in his name. Those standards have done more to improve society by providing hope, standards of morality and human rights, improved standards of living and educational opportunities for all. Any person who exemplifies the best of these principles may be eligible.

The criteria are as follows:

1. One man and one woman will be selected for this award annually.

2. Any person who does something for society outside his occupation or profession above and beyond the normal expectation.

3. The award is not given to anyone because he/she holds political office or occupies a prominent position in society. People from all stations of life are eligible.

4. A memorial plaque will be awarded to each recipient and an honorarium in the amount of $200.00 will be given in the recipient's name to the charity of his/her choice.

Nominations for the Dr. David B. Kagan Award must be received by the selection committee no later than May 14. They may be sent to: Kagan Award Committee, P.O. Box 78, Pittsfield, MA 01202-0078. The awards will then be presented to the recipients who will be the guests of the club at the Rotary's weekly luncheon meeting on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at noon in the Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Striking Out Cancer in Berkshires Holds Sunday Party Before June 27 Games

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires.com Sports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Striking out Cancer in the Berkshires has been bringing smiles for half a decade.

This year, it also is bringing Smiley.

A day of community baseball and softball games that act as a fund-raiser for the Jimmy Fund is the brainchild of Joe DiCicco, who has expanded the event’s footprint over the years and seen a steady growth in money raised as a result.

This year’s games are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on June 27 on Buddy Pellerin Field at Clapp Park.

But the festivities begin this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sideline Saloon on Fenn Street, where DiCicco invites families to come down, free of charge, to take photos with a Boston Red Sox World Series Trophy and meet Boston mascot Wally the Green Monster and Smiley, the mascot of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.

“It’s just a little way to give back to the community to start the week,” DiCicco said. “Last year, we had the trophy for the first time, and they want to bring it back, so that’s a good thing. Wally is different, and so is Smiley.”

What has not changed is DiCicco’s dedication to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund, inspired by Einar Gustafson, a child who beat cancer with the help of Dr. Sidney Farber in 1948 and shared his story with the world under the name Jimmy to protect his anonymity.
