Pittsfield High School’s Concert Band will play on Friday, March 20 at 7:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsfield to celebrate Music in Our Schools Month. This concert will include Pittsfield High School band alumni and friends, a first of its kind for this organization. Adding the alumni and friends of the Pittsfield High School band will increase the size of the band from its usual 45 members to 65 members.

The concert program, an evening of American pops music, will include compositions written or arranged by prominent composers such as Sammy Nestico, Harold Walters, John Higgins, and Henry Fillmore. The program will also feature the Pittsfield High School Jazz Ensemble and the school’s Saxophone Quartet, which will play an arrangement of George Gershwin’s “Strike Up the Band.” The Jazz Ensemble’s program will include music written by Duke Ellington and Jerome Kern.

This community concert will benefit the Pittsfield High School Concert Band’s trip to the international band competition in Montreal, Canada in May. The concert band has attended these competitions in the past and has received excellent and superior ratings for its music and presentation. Several current band students were selected this year for Western Massachusetts District Concert Band and the University of Massachusetts Honors Band. Support for this trip will come from ticket sales to this concert and underwriting from businesses and individuals in this community.

Tickets are available from current PHS band members for $8.00 each. Tickets will be available on the night of the concert for $10.00 each. A bake sale will also be part of the evening’s activities.

Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting a smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settle neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m.

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation.

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call.

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said.

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
