Reclaiming da Vinci: A Symposium of Art and Mathematics
12:06PM / Thursday, March 05, 2009
The Williams College Museum of Art presents Reclaiming da Vinci: A Symposium of Art and Mathematics, a special one-day event on Saturday, March 14 from 10 am to 4 pm. Bringing together origami engineers, mathematicians, and artists, this event seeks to bridge the gap between the two seemingly disparate disciplines. Associate Professor of Mathematics Satyan Devadoss explains, "The fields of mathematics and the visual arts, which once grew in tandem, have over the centuries gone in separate ways.
The goal of this symposium is to help reclaim what was lost by bringing together those who walk the line between these two worlds, to excite and inspire the next generation of da Vincis." The program begins at 10 am with an opportunity to view the galleries. Robert Lang, an "origami engineer," will give a presentation at 11 am followed by a presentation by Ed Burger, a Williams mathematics professor at 1 pm. Artist Alyson Shotz will give an artist's talk at 2 pm and a reception follows at 3 pm.
Events are free and open to the public. Visitors can attend just one or all of the events. No preregistration is required.
This symposium is a collaboration among the Williams College Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Department of Computer Science, the Williams College Museum of Art, and the Mellon Foundation.
The Williams College Museum of Art is located on Main Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am-5 pm and Sunday from 1-5 pm. The museum is wheelchair accessible and open to the public. Admission is FREE. For more information, contact the museum at 413-597-2429.
