Westfield State Picked To Claim 2009 MASCAC Baseball Championship

Buzzards Bay, Mass. — The Owls of Westfield State College are the pre-season pick to win the 2009 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Baseball championship in a vote of the league’s coaches.

Westfield State captured three first place votes to amass 57 points in taking the top spot in the poll, as the Owls outdistanced second place Worcester State’s total of 52 points that included one first place vote. Bridgewater State, which garnered three first place votes, is next in third place with 48 points, while Salem State and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (which received the other first place vote) follow in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively, with 42 and 37 points. Massachusetts Maritime is next in sixth place with 25 points, while Fitchburg State and Framingham State round out the poll in seventh and eighth place with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

The Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference is comprised of eight state member institutions that sponsor 15 championships in NCAA Division III play. MASCAC members Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College compete for league titles in the sports of baseball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s & women’s soccer, softball, men’s & women’s track & field and women’s volleyball.

SteepleCats Shut Out on Road

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Four Vermont pitchers combined to strike out 11 and allow four hits Tuesday as the Mountaineers beat the North Adams SteepleCats, 11-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
 
Evan Meier, Bobby Stang, Tonny Woodie and Chris Diaz each had a hit for the SteepleCats, who used five pitchers in the loss.
 
North Adams (0-2) comes home Tuesday to host the Mystic Schooners at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field.
