Buzzards Bay, Mass. — Westfield State College senior forward Andrea Wasuk has been named as the 2008-09 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and heads the league’s all-conference squad in a vote taken of the conference’s seven coaches. A native of Lenox, Mass., Wasuk led the league in scoring at 14.9 points per game while adding 6.3 rebounds percontest during the regular season, as she led the Owls to the MASCAC regular season championship with an overall mark of 20-4, including an 11-1 slate in conference play.

Bridgewater State College freshman forward Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) was tabbed as the 2008-09 MASCAC Rookie of the Year after averaging 10.5 points and 6.7 rebounds during her inaugural collegiate campaign.

Westfield State’s Andrea Bertini was recognized by her peers as the 2008-09 MASCAC Coach of the Year after leading the Owls to 20 wins to date as well as the MASCAC regular season crown.

Wasuk and DePina were joined on the 2008-09 MASCAC first-team all-conference squad by Fitchburg State’sStephanie Payette, Westfield State’s Katie Sylvain, Salem State’s Danielle Jenkins and Worcester State’s Alexis George.

The 2008-09 MASCAC second-team all-conference squad consisted of Fitchburg State’s Kelley Rogers, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts’ Jen Wehner, Salem State’s Jakoya Wilkins, Bridgewater State’s Corey Cuddihy, Westfield State’s Sarah Boudreau and Framingham State’s Toya Chester.

Jen Wehner (Cooperstown High School) of MCLA was one of the top first year players in the MASCAC this season. The freshman from Cooperstown, NY averaged 12.7 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game. Wehner also led the conference in field goal percentage at a robust 58.3 percent and was 2nd in the conference in blocked shots.

Now celebrating its 38th year, the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference is comprised of eight NCAA Division III member institutions: Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
