The Bay State Games kicked off in Northern Berkshire on Friday with Master's Ice Hockey competition at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Skating Rink in North Adams.
The annual games bring thousands of amateur athletes and fans to the region to compete in figure skating, Alpine skiing and hockey. This is the 24th year that the Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation has held the games here. Athletes participating in the Winter Games represent more than 200 Massachusetts communities and range in age from 8 to 60 plus.
Events are free to watch with the exception of the Bay State Skate Show held in the Lansing Chapman Rink at Williams College on Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 7:30. The show features the games' gold medal winners, regional figure skating champions and the local Christmas Brook Skating Club. Tickets are $10 and available at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Skating Rink, Where'd You Get That in Williamstown, and Smith Brothers-McAndrews Insurance in Adams.
The games will also, in conjunction with sponsors Greylock Federal Credit Union and Greylock Insurance, award the 2nd annual Berkshire Heroes Award. It was created last year to recognize Berkshire County citizens who have made significant contributions to the success of the Winter Games over the last 24 years. This year's recipients are Dale Waterman, Heidi Cornwell and Ken and Michele Gietz.
