NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Berkshire Environmental Resource Center (BERC) at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will kick off a series of 12 “Green Living” seminars and workshops this Thursday, Jan. 29, at 5:30 p.m. with a workshop on “Pruning Fruit Trees,” in Murdock Hall conference room 218.

The public is invited to attend this free series, “Good Food: Sustainable Agriculture for the 21st Century.” The aim of the series is to inform students and the community about why and how to increase the sustainability of our food system.

“I encourage area residents to attend these ‘Green Living’ lectures and workshops as we collaborate together as a community for a sustainable future,” said Elena Traister, MCLA professor of environmental studies.

“Pruning Fruit Trees” will be taught by John Trimarchi, owner of Trimarchi Nurseries in Adams. Trimarchi will discuss tips and proper techniques for pruning trees and shrubs. This hands-on workshop will help guide you to complete almost any pruning project.

Trimarchi has a bachelor'’ degree in landscape Architecture from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, N.Y., and has owned Trimarchi Nurseries since 1994.

On Thursday, Feb. 5, Jennifer Munoz of  REACH will present “Local Food Production for Improved Nutrition and Local Food Security.”

Munoz has more than 22 years of experience with community health education, both domestically and abroad. After being hired at REACH for Community Health in 2006, Munoz began creating several community and school garden programs as a way to help people develop an appreciation for fresh vegetables and learn about nutrition.

This lecture also will take place in Murdock Hall room 218, at 5:30 p.m.

The series will continue on Thursdays through April 23. For more information, go to www.mcla.edu or contact Elena Traister at (413) 662-5303.
