The Hub

12:13AM / Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Telephone: 413-662-2500

Address: 55 Main St., North Adams, Mass.

E-mail: theHubRestaurant@gmail.com .

The Hub offers comfortable, casual dining with "good food, good atmosphere, good service, at a good price."

Owners Kate and Matt Schilling (Kate's the manager, Matt's the chef) wanted to create a relaxed, casual and fun atmosphere for locals and tourist alike.

The restaurant is named for a popular eatery that operated downtown in the 1950s and its location was home to another popular dining establishment, the Capitol.

The completely refurbished interior offers seating for the lone diner or groups. The walls, painted a soft yellow and vibrant red, are covered in historic photographs of a bustling downtown. The back room seats up to 30 people — great for a night out with friends or a holiday party.

"This has been our dream. We're restaurant people. We always used to say 'If I had my own place, I'd do things differently.' So, one day we just got to thinking about it and it just — bang! — happened. It all happened so fast but the idea and the menu were already engrained in us. We just knew," Kate Schilling said.

People are talking

The Hub's jambalaya, a recipe derived from Matt's 10 years living in the Bayou, has patrons coming back for more. The rice dish made with chicken, shrimp and andouille sausage is a must-try — no crock is exactly like the last.

The lunch menu offers the popular BBQ pulled pork sandwich from the Schillings' own recipe served on a toasted kaiser roll.  For homey comfort, try the Grown-up Grilled Cheese on artisan bread with creamy Muenster cheese, shaved ham and tomato. It goes great with one of the three homemade soups offered daily.

The dinner menu features flat iron steak and New York strip (all seasoned with The Hub's secret "Hub Rub"). Also on the menu is Matt's famous meatloaf topped with homemade gravy. For the vegetable lover, the Veggie Pasta offers lots of fresh vegetables sautéed in garlic, butter, lemon and white wine, served over penne pasta and garnished with fresh parmesan cheese; or new to our menu the Portabella Pesto Burger. Seafood lovers must try the Cajun Cod, pan fried until and golden brown, topped with an andouille cream sauce.

The Hub offers the "comfort foods" you crave this winter; like Southern Fried Chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, and the pot pie offered with Chicken or Shrimp…topped with freshly baked puff pastry…great for a chilly day!!

The Hub offers takeout and a fully stocked bar with large flat-panel television.

Breakfast is served on weekends only, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ask about the create-your-own omelette or try the smoked salmon bagel, breakfast burrito or steak and eggs.

Open Tuesday through Friday from 11 to 9:30; Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Closed Mondays.
