WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Three Eph seniors who were instrumental in leading Williams to a combined 26-6 record over the last four years have earned All-ECAC-Northeast First Team Honors. Left offensive tackle John Szawlowski (Hatfield, MA), defensive end Charlie Birns (Scarsdale, NY) and defensive back Tim Batty (Chenango Bridge, NY) form the honored Eph trio.

Szawlowski, Birns and Batty were key contributors to the 2006 Ephs that went 8-0, post four consecutive wins over archrival Amherst and captured four straight Little Three titles.

John Szawlowski is the first Eph since LB Graham Goldwasser in 2003 to be honored as an AFCA NCAA Division III First Team All-American.

A three-year starter and three-year All-NESCAC First Team selection for the Ephs, he was previously named to the New England Football Writers Division II-III All Star Team in both 2007 and 2008, named to the 2008 D3footbal.com All-East First Team, 2008 D3football.com All-American Second Team, and to the ECAC-Northeast First Team in 2007.

Birns capped off his career with a stellar senior campaign that saw him lead NESCAC in sacks with eight. Birns's sacks resulted in 57 yards lost. He had 10.5 tackles for a loss, broke up one pass, recorded two QB hurries, recovered one fumble and blocked two kicks. His 36 tackles (26 solos) was tied for fourth best on the Eph team. Earlier this fall Birns was named to the All-NESCAC First Team.

Batty graduates as the Williams leader in solo tackles in Division III play with a total of 98. This season Batty was second on the Eph squad in tackles with 44 (36 solos). One of NESCAC's top cover men, Batty intercepted three passes on the year and broke up five. He also chipped in with 1.5 tackles for a loss two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Batty was also a 2008 All-NESCAC First Team selection.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
