Clark Gallery Talk Focuses On Recently Acquired Sculpture
02:14PM / Monday, December 01, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The recently acquired bronze sculpture Joan of Arc in Prayer by Marie d'Orleans will be the subject of the Thursday, December 11, Looking at Lunchtime Talk at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Danielle Steinmann, assistant curator of education, will present the 12:30 pm gallery talk. Admission is free.
Joan of Arc in Prayer by Marie d'Orleans was cast in the mid-1840s after the marble original of 1837, now in the collection of Versailles. After its debut, this image of Joan of Arc in Prayer became hugely popular in France, inspiring prints, advertisements, textiles, and even vinegar labels. During this lunchtime talk, Steinmann will explore what caused its success, from the tragically short life of the artist who created it (who just happened to be a princess) to the ever-present hold the "maid of Orleans" has on the French psyche.
The series continues on Thursday, January 8, when Sarah Lees, associate curator of European art, examines Musical Group by François Joseph Navez. The talks take place at 12:30 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (open daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID. For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit clarkart.edu.
