Pan Flute Virtuoso Visits EPOCH
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pan flutist Douglas Bishop will perform his unique form of music at EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne on Friday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m. EPOCH Assisted Living is located at 140 Melbourne Road. Bishop has more than 25 years of experience on the pan flute, having begun playing when he was 10 years old.
Pan flutes typically consist of five bamboo closed tubes, or pipes, of increasing length. It is played by blowing across the tops of the tubes. It is a popular instrument in folk music.
While he was classically trained in his youth on the pan flute in the European tradition, he broke from tradition and broadened his horizons by traveling and studying pan flute methods in more than 30 countries. His methods are considered unorthodox by many pan flute purists, but he says he enjoys more latitude to explore more music forms. “I enjoy my maverick status,” he says.
Part of EPOCH Assisted Living’s programs for residents, this performance is open to visitors at no charge but a reservation is requested at 413-499-1992.
