The Shirelles To Perform Holiday Concert At The Clark09:26AM / Friday, November 07, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass - The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute begins the Holiday Walk Weekend by welcoming the Shirelles on Friday, December 12, at 8 pm. The concert will feature classic Shirelles hits blended with holiday favorites.
Beverly Lee, an original Shirelle, will be accompanied by vocalists Diane Spann and Louise Bethune. Tickets are $20 ($18 for members and students). To purchase tickets, call 413-458-0524 or visit clarkart.edu. Purchase tickets early, as this concert will likely sell out.
Beginning in 1958 as schoolgirls in Passaic, New Jersey, the Shirelles quickly became rock and roll's first female supergroup and were the inspirations for a legion of female groups that followed. They are universally credited as the originators of the Girl Group Sound and the first all woman group of the rock-and-roll era to score a number-one record. Their long string of hits, including: "Soldier Boy," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "Dedicated To The One I Love," "Mama Said," and so many others, have been recorded by hundreds of artists. The Shirelles, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, have earned their exalted place in modern musical history.
The Shirelles were among the first women to write their own music and they also launched the careers of songwriters like Carole King, Burt Bacharach, Ashford & Simpson, and Van McCoy. Constantly reissued, The Shirelles Greatest Hits received the highest rating in the Rolling Stone Record Guide. Several original Shirelles albums have been re-released on compact disc to resounding acclaim.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit www.clarkart.edu. |
