Ephs record first shutout victory over Springfield, 2-0

SPRINGFIELD, MA - The team traveled a quick ninety minutes for a mid-week non-conference match up against Springfield College this evening. Moving up three spots in the national polls since their last contest, the fifth-ranked Williams women’s soccer team (3-0) tallied their third victory of the season against the Pride with a 2-0 result.

The Pride’s most recent memory of the Ephs came last fall when Williams ousted Springfield from the NCAA Division III Championships in the second round, 1-0. Hoping to avenge the loss, the Pride played strong on the defensive end but failed to create any offense against an equally tough back third of the field from Williams. Williams dealt Springfield their first home loss since October 14, 2006.

“I thought we possessed the ball very well,” said Ephs head coach Michelyne Pinard. “They have a very organized back four, and it is hard to get in behind them but we managed to venture and attack their third very well. It was an overall great game.”

The Ephs found the back of the net early at the 12:39 mark when Brianna Wolfson capitalized off a loose ball outside the box. Wolfson easily maneuvered past her defender and the Pride’s goalkeeper for the game-winning score. Williams came out in the second period with a quick goal once again. Gabrielle Woodson laced a high ball to the far right corner to solidify a 2-0 lead nearly five minutes into the half.

Lauren Sinnenberg and Julia Schreiber split time for the Ephs, while Sinnenberg gets credit for the Ephs’ first shutout victory with the start. Sue Jenney saw ninety minutes of action, with 5 saves and two goals allowed.

Williams will return to conference play when they host Bowdoin this Saturday at 12:30.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
