BMC Planning Major Expansion Project

PITTSFIELD — Berkshire Medical Center is planning a major expansion for a surgical unit and to nearly triple its parking availability.

The Pittsfield Gazette reports that plans are in the works for a five-level garage that would precede the eventual development of a new 54,000-square-foot outpatient surgery facility. The new medical facility would replace the Crane Day Surgery facility.

A formal request has been submitted to the Pittsfield Community Development Board, which will review the proposal on Oct. 7. The new parking garage would be build on a 2.24-acre parcel that borders Wahconah, Park and Seymour streets and will contain 618 parking spaces. The current parking garage has 224 spaces.

If all goes according to plan, the new parking garage could open next year. Berkshire Medical Center is operated by Berkshire Health Systems.

Hurricane Speculation Drives Up Prices

PITTSFIELD — The arrival of Hurricane Ike on the Texas coast may have something to do with local gas stations hiking the cost of gasoline up by as much as 15 cents a gallon today.

Reports from drivers in Pittsfield say the Sunoco gas station on Merrill Road had regular gasoline posted at $3.53 yesterday but, by 11 this morning, it has been raised to $3.68 a gallon. One truck driver called the Berkshire News Network newsroom complaining that something should be done about this.

You can bet if one gas station has raised their prices, others will follow suit but that hasn't happened yet throughout the city of Pittsfield. Many gas stations continue to sell regular gas for as low as $3.55 a gallon — for now.

Gas prices have actually dropped every week for the last nine weeks, according to AAA of Southern New England. On Monday, it had dropped another 5 cents to 3.559. That's still nearly a dollar more than last year at this time.

The Berkshire News Network urges you to report gasoline prices in your community to www.gasbuddy.com.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
