Guest Editorial: Crucial Times Call For Sensible Thought

Hi everyone. I have been writing for a long time. Mostly, I write about sports; as some of you know, it is a passion of mine. Many of you may also know that I also have a political side.

Politics has interested me ever since I was young. Other than my dad and my grandfather, John F. Kennedy is the only other man I have truly looked up to. I have run for public office, unfortunately unsuccessfully. I have worked to help presidential campaigns as a volunteer and I even stood on a rainy street corner as teenager to help campaign for my friend's dad for county commissioner.

This presidential election has gained my interest more than any I can remember. We are at a very crucial time in this country. Americans are losing their homes and cars at an alarming rate. We are paying prices for fuel that affect us so much it plays into our everyday decisions on how much we can spend on food and medicine or how much we can buy our kids for school for fear we can't heat our homes for the winter (if we still have those homes).

Our education system is in disarray and schools are underperforming all over the U.S.  Health care is no longer about helping our sick but rather about privatizing hospitals so that corporations can make more money. Insurance claims are being denied and men, women and children in large cities and small towns alike are without health care.

  Gov. Sarah Palin
Our commander in chief led us down a road to war based on deception and lies. It was supposed to be about weapons of mass destruction. Remember the proof he had? Did we ever see it? Our sons and daughters, nieces and nephews and grandsons and granddaughters as well as our friends were sent into harm's way and, to this day, we have yet to see the proof that these weapons actually ever existed.

Now it has become about Iraq and its links to terrorism and the Sept. 11 attacks. Again, has there been any concrete evidence those links exist? No. This was simply a job that dad couldn't finish so his son finished it for him.

Obviously, there are many more issues our country is facing. It would take days to cover them all. But let these serve as an example of how desperately you need to treat this election as the most important of your life and your children's lives and their children's lives.

The last eight years under George W. Bush have been about George W. Bush, not about America. John McCain is cut from the same cloth with the same ideals and ideas. His record overwhelmingly shows his dedication to Bush politics as he has voted WITH Bush almost 95 percent of the time. McCain talks about his rival Barack Obama and tells us that Obama is the most underqualified presidential candidate in our nation's history.

While that may be true, McCain then announces his vice presidential candidate as Sarah Palin. Who? Sarah Palin. Say it with me — Sarah Palin.

An obvious attempt to capture the voters who supported Hillary Rodham Clinton but who have not decided whether to support Obama, this ploy cannot help but backfire. If you are a Clinton supporter, your face should be stinging right now from the slap you just got.

I have nothing against "hockey moms," or women in general for that matter, but this is ridiculous. This governor from Alaska is potentially a heartbeat away from being the president of our country. Nothing against Alaska either, but talk about underqualified to be president.

If you are a Republican, how can you honestly say that this choice helps your ticket? I watched her acceptance speech tonight and it was all about being a mom and coming from a small town and blah blah blah. None of it offered any solutions to the problems facing this country. And can you guess why? It's because McCain and Palin don't have any plans.

Their ticket will offer four more years of the last eight years, as Senator Clinton so brilliantly put it. The things that are wrong with this country happened because of their party's gross misguidance. Can we really afford to have her at the helm of the most powerful office in the world? Honestly, can we? That could happen.

Barack Obama is the right choice in this election to take us out of this hole we got thrown into. He has concrete plans for universal health care for all Americans. He has a timeline to respectfully get our soldiers out of Iraq and put our military efforts into finding Osama Bin Laden and routing out the terror cells in Afghanistan. He has given his plan to restore the U.S. credentials throughout the world through diplomacy before force and save the lives of our men and women in uniform.

His plans for alternative fuel sources will create thousands of green-collar jobs, drive fuel prices down and help save our planet. Along with the guidance of Senator Clinton in some capacity, our education system will return to helping our students rather than keeping them in the dark. Isn't that what we want? Isn't that what we need? Isn't that America?

Vote Obama and let's be the America we used to be.

Lanesborough Town Meeting to Vote Budget, Bylaws & Vehicle Purchases

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Tuesday's annual town meeting includes a $14 million operating budget, new short-term rentals, accessory dwelling units and sign bylaws, and free cash article appropriations.

Voters will gather at Lanesborough Elementary School on June 9 at 6 p.m. to decide on 20 warrant articles.

The fiscal 2027 budget is up a little over 10 percent. Some of the main increases are the Mount Greylock Regional School District and McCann Technical School: the McCann assessment is up more than 30 percent based on factors including enrollment and the school renovation project, and Mount Greylock's is up 11 percent.

Article 11 is for the town to vote to approve from free cash the sum of $16,298.48 for the McCann Technical School roof and window replacement project so as not to impact the budget. Article 3 is  appropriate $7,586,284 for Mount Greylock Regional School assessment.

Another notable increase was in life and health insurance, showing an increase of about 26 percent.

Ambulance Director Jen Weber is planning 24-hour coverage, which means more staff and a hike in her budget. One of the articles asks the town to appropriate $234,100 to operate the Ambulance Enterprise Fund for salaries and expenses.

Many town departments are looking for new vehicles. The Fire Department is looking to replace its outdated 1996 fire engine. There are two articles related to the truck at a total of $813,366. Article 12 would transfer $225,000 from free cash into the Fire Truck Stabilization Fund; Article 13 would transfer $605,000 from the fund and authorize the borrowing of $208,366.08.

The total includes a $100,000 contingency cost to cover any additional costs if a 2026 model-year chassis cannot be secured before new emissions standards go into effect in 2027.

The board at its last meeting moved the $225,000 transfer to come before the borrowing article, changing the stabilization number. If the $225,000 is not voted on, then they will amend the next article's number on the floor, subtracting the $225,000. This shows the borrowing number significantly lower.

Article 17 asks for the transfer of $80,000 from free cash to replace a police cruiser.

Police Chief Rob Derksen's aim is to replace one vehicle every other year, meaning the oldest vehicle gets replaced about every 10 years.

He stressed that if delayed this year, the town may have to double up in a future year to get back on schedule, and that paying later usually costs more. The article will ask for $80,000 from free cash, the vehicles used to be funded by the BHRD.

Lastly, the Highway Department is looking to replace a 2014 International dump truck that will be a total of $330,000 and will take two to three years to receive.

Money will be used from last year's approval of $250,000 from free cash for the replacement of a 2012 highway front-end loader that was underspent $49,261. Town meeting is being asked to approve  a transfer of $53,274.85 from free cash and the use of $227,464 from funds from the Sale of Town Real Estate to fund the balance.

Other free cash proposals include $1,200 to purchase software to support tracking and ongoing maintenance schedules of town-owned vehicles; $42,000 for the replacement of the Highway Department's storage shed roof, $200,000 to reduce the tax levy.
