BCC to Hold Fall Registration Session

Berkshire Community College will hold an advising and registration session at the Intermodal Education Center in downtown Pittsfield on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 4:30 to 6.

This session is only for the five credit courses shown below that will meet at the downtown facility during BCC’s fall semester which begins Sept. 2 and ends Dec. 22. Advising and registration for all other BCC credit courses must be made through the college’s Academic Advising Center on the main campus at 1350 West Street.

BCC credit courses to be held at the Intermodal Education Center, located on the second floor of the BRTA building on the corner of North Street and Columbus Avenue, include the following:

“Juvenile Justice Process” (CRJ 125) focuses on delinquency theories and the treatment of juveniles in the criminal justice system. Classes meet on Monday from 3:45 to 6:45.

“Introductory Psychology” (PSY 107) is a traditional basic course in psychology. Topics include research methods and experimental design, biology and behavior, development, learning, and conditioning. Intelligence and memory, sensation and perception, motivation and emotion, theories of personality, abnormal behavior and psychotherapy are also included. Classes meet on Tuesday from 2 to 5.


“Composition I” (ENG-101) introduces the use of library resources and source documentation. Topics include the writing process and thesis, focus, development of a logical sequence of paragraphs, use of supporting examples and specific details, and sentence construction style. Classes meet on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30.

“Elementary Algebra I-III” (MAT 028) teaches how to solve and graph linear equations and inequalities, and solve systems of equations Polynomials are introduced. Classes meet on Wednesday from 6 to 9.

“Applied Contemporary Math” (MAT 101) examines various mathematical concepts that focus on solving problems, interpreting data, and applications. Tables, graphs, basic statistics, geometric measures, and consumer mathematics are included. Classes meet on Thursday from 1 to 4.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
