SteepleCats sweep twinbill

Chad Cooper
08:50AM / Thursday, July 31, 2008

The North Adams SteepleCats finished off their regular season slate in exciting fashion, sweeping a doubleheader from the Pittsfield Dukes winning game one 7-2 and taking game two 8-7.

With the sweep, North Adams also claims the Battle of the Berkshires four games to two.

The SteepleCats put together a two out rally in the first inning, plating a run on RBI single from Cody Stanley. North Adams came through with three more runs in the second, all with two outs. Mike Donato was hit by a pitch followed by walks to Ryan Semeniuk and John Malloy. T. J. Greig came up and singled in a pair to make it 3-0. On a walk to Jonny Smith, ball four got by catcher Kevin Clements. As he went after the ball John Malloy hustled all the way around from second to score and make it 4-0.

North Adams would score one more in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 7-0 before Pittsfield plated two to create the 7-2 final.

Nick Serino (3-2) got the game one win going five innings allowing two runs. Luke Mazzanti (1-2) took the loss.

In game two leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the second, the ‘Cats exploded for four runs keyed by back-to-back homeruns from Cody Stanley – who blasted a two-run shot to right – and Ryan Delgado, who clubbed a solo homer to left, taking a 6-1 lead.

After North Adams scored a run in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead, the SteepleCats had to endure a Dukes rally in the sixth that pulled things to within 7-6. North Adams would get a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Cody Stanley’s second homer of the game to make it 8-6.

Pittsfield would score a run in the seventh before Greg Robinson shut the door for his second save of the season.

As part of the intrigue of the doubleheader, the SteepleCats emptied the bench starting in the fifth and by the end of the contest, all but one player, position and pitcher, appeared in the contest.

The North Adams SteepleCats will now play on the road on Saturday in game one of the playoffs before playing at Joe Wolfe Field on Sunday, August 3 at 7 p.m. The opponent for the SteepleCats in the first round will be determined based on the outcome of the Newport-Pittsfield game on Thursday.
