NEWPORT, R.I. — The Newport Gulls used three big innings and a strong pitching performance by Chase Reid to defeat the North Adams (Mass.) SteepleCats 10-4.
The contest started off well for North Adams as, for the second straight game, the 'Cats got on the board via the long ball as John Malloy led off with a homerun to right, giving North Adams a 1-0 lead and extending Malloy's hitting streak to 16 games.
Malloy got things going again for North Adams in the third as he led off with a single. After T.J. Greig sacrificed him to second, Paul Hoilman dunked a single into right field, bringing home Malloy for a 2-0 SteepleCats lead.
The lead would last to the bottom of the third inning when Newport plated four runs, the big shot a three-run homerun from Kyle Conley as the Gulls took a 4-2 lead. Newport took command of the game in the sixth, plating three runs and three more in the seventh to pull ahead 10-2.
The SteepleCats were able to score twice in the ninth inning off Robert Morey, but were able to get no closer than the 10-4 score.
Meanwhile, Reid (3-0) was fantastic for Newport, not allowing a hit between the third and seventh innings. He allowed six hits and two runs, walking one and striking out eight. Matt Sommo (2-3) took the loss for North Adams.
North Adams now comes home for a division matchup against the Torrington (Conn.) Twisters on Thursday. Tim Boyce (5-1, 1.02) will start the game for the SteepleCats against Eric Jokisch (1-2, 5.92) for Torrington. Thursday is Berkshire Bank Night at Joe Wolfe Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
