NARH Blood Bank Accredited by American Association of Blood Banks - July 02, 2008
NORTH ADAMS - North Adams Regional Hospital has been granted a two-year accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
Accreditation follows an intensive on-site assessment by specially trained AABB assessors and establishes that the level of medical, technical, and administrative performance within the facility meets or exceeds the standards set by the AABB. By successfully meeting those requirements, NARH joins more than 1,800 similar facilities across the United States and abroad that have earned AABB accreditation.
“The AABB’s accreditation procedures are voluntary,” Deborah August, M.D., NARH Laboratory Medical Director, explained. “NARH has maintained AABB accreditation for over 35 years because this program assists facilities around the world in achieving excellence by promoting a level of professional and medical expertise that contributes to quality performance.”
NARH’s blood bank provides blood and blood components for patients in the hospital as well as chemotherapy patients and outpatients. The blood bank handles about 1,500 units of blood per year.
AABB Accreditation is the designation of choice for blood banking, transfusion medicine and blood management because it demonstrates an organization’s commitment to advanced learning, continuous improvement and innovation by striving to sustain the highest possible level of patient and donor care. AABB-accredited organizations are recognized by their peers as leaders in their field and as pivotal voices in the dialogue through which consensus-based, voluntary standards are developed and implemented. |
