TORRINGTON, Conn. — The Torrington Twisters scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge out the North Adams, Mass., SteepleCats 2-1.

Torrington jumped up 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning as with Chase Austin on second, Jonathan Cluff grounded a ball to third base, where it went through the legs of Greg Van Horn, allowing Austin to come in to score and making it 1-0 Torrington.

North Adams would come back in the top of the fifth. With one, Brian Adams walked and stole second. T.J. Greig reached on an error by Joe DiPinto to put runners on the corners. With Nick Shaw at the plate, Greig stole second. On the throw to second, Brian Adams came plateward, stealing home to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Matt Sommo found himself in a jam allowing a double and a single to the first two batters of the inning, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Sommo would not be deterred, however, as he bore down and struck out the heart of the Twisters lineup, whiffing Chase Austin, Jaren Matthews and Jonathan Cluff to end the threat.

After stranding baserunners in the sixth and seventh, the Twisters finally broke through in the eighth as with two down, Corey Shimada singled to center to score Josh Chasse and give the Twisters the eventual winning run.

Eric Jokisch (1-1) picked up the win, going eight strong, surrendering just three hits and retiring the last 11 batters he faced. Robert Chimpky picked up his second save of the season. Matt Sommo allowed just one unearned run over seven innings for North Adams. Derek Shaw (0-2) took the loss for the SteepleCats.

The SteepleCats now have Sunday and Monday off before hosting divisional rival Newport, R.I., Gulls on Tuesday.

The SteepleCats will host a baseball clinic at The Range on Curran Highway on Sunday, June 29, from 11 to 1. Kids of all ages will have the opportunity to practice batting and throwing fundamentals with the SteepleCats. Come and take advantage of the opportunity to practice with the SteepleCats coaches and players while practicing in the batting cages at The Range.
