Through August 17: During the first decades of the 20th century, photographers in Europe and America were engaged in a heated debate over the status of photography. A group united to assert their belief that photography should be considered an art form rather than merely a means of visual documentation. Representing this notion, Pictorial Vision: American and European Photography, features 15 photographs dating from the 1880s to the 1920s drawn from the collections of the Clark and the Troob Family Foundation. Among the artists represented are Peter Henry Emerson, Eduard Steichen, Alvin Langdon Coburn, George Seeley, and Pierre Dubreuil. Through October 19: Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness, and the Art of Painting Softly features forty beautiful paintings by James McNeill Whistler, George Inness, and other American artists working around 1900 in an examination the art of painting softly. As Whistler once stated, "Paint should not be applied thick. It should be like breath on the surface of a pane of glass." The result of this counsel is a body of contemplative and meditative paintings that, like the mist of breath's condensation on glass, appear on the canvas without evidence of the artist's hand. Through October 19: American artists Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent captured sensations ranging from North Atlantic cold to North African heat. Homer and Sargent from the Clark, the inaugural exhibition in Stone Hill Center, features 12 of the Clark's masterpieces by these two great artists, shown in contemplative gallery spaces that connect art and nature. These bold paintings complement the softly painted works featured in Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness, and the Art of Painting Softly, on view in the Clark's main exhibition galleries. July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29: Take a 45-minute hike with an experienced trail guide and discover the myriad trails on the Clark's grounds. Hikes begin and end at the Visitor's Tent and will include a walk around Stone Hill Center, the Stone Bench, and the site of the Exhibiton, Visitor, and Conference Center to be completed in 2013. Rain cancels this event. Hikes are free with paid gallery admission. Hikes are held at 3, 4, and 5 pm on Tuesdays in July. July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29: Bring family and friends, a picnic, blankets, and lawn chairs to the Clark on Tuesday evenings in July for outdoor concerts. The galleries will remain open until 6 pm on concert evenings. In the event of rain, the concerts will be held in the auditorium. Barbeque food will be available for purchase during the concert. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, will discuss Japanese ceramic artists' approach to clay as a raw material and as an intrinsic component of the "meaning" of their creations. July 27: Enjoy a free Family Day with a Japanese flair inspired by the opening of Stone Hill Center. Be amazed by a demonstration by the Maine Thunder Spirits Taiko Drumming and Martial Arts team, listen to award-winning storyteller Motoko Dworkin, catch Japanese anime short films, help create a giant community mural, learn origami, meet the roving giant puppets, and take in a haiku workshop.
