Berkshire Enterprises Breakfast Business Forum

Print Story | Email Story
The Berkshire Enterprises next business breakfast forum will be held on Friday, March 21st from 7:30 to 9:00 AM at the Williams Inn in Williamstown. The forum is called FOCUS--Keeping an Eye on the Most Important and will feature a discussion with Steve Fogel, the Program Director of Berkshire Enterprises. The forum is designed for owners and managers of small businesses and organizations.

Organizations performance often suffers when leaders focus on too many areas and lose track of what they are supposed to be doing. Employees, customers, suppliers, and other stake holders do not know what the organization stands for and what it is trying to do for them. We will discuss identifying where to focus and how to remain dedicated to that focus in spite of other stresses and calls to change direction.

In today’s business environment, there is a temptation to try to be all things to all people. We are trying to please everyone. Unless organizations focus on what we do best and find a niche where people need their products and services, the organizations will fail whether they are small companies or giants. The forum will focus on helping small organizations and businesses succeed.

The Business Forum is free and a light refreshments and coffee will be served. Space is limited and reservations are required. For reservations or for more information about the Forums, call Steve Fogel at Berkshire Enterprises at 413-236-2141.

The program is the second of a series of monthly Business Forums focusing on practical business issues for small businesses that Berkshire Enterprises is holding in North County. The Forums are sponsored by Berkshire Bank, Legacy Banks, Greylock Federal Credit Union, TD Banknorth, and the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank. Berkshire Enterprises is a program of the Office for Workforce Development at Berkshire Community College.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
