Art League Slates Scholarship Competition

LENOX - Housatonic Valley Art League will hold its 33rd annual College Scholarship Competition at the Welles Gallery in the Lenox Library.

A reception which is open to the public will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 30; the awards will be announced at 2. The exhibit will be open from March 30 through April 25 during the library's regular hours.

The competition is open to any area high school senior residing in the Berkshires or the adjacent school districts in New York and Connecticut who plans to major in the visual arts and has applied to begin study this fall at a college, university, or accredited art school.

Students should apply through his or her art teacher. Each applicant must submit the following: 1.) Three completed works ready for display, 2.) a sketchbook or portfolio of drawings and practice work, and 3.) a personal statement about the student's art process and what he or she hopes to express through his or her work. The works submitted for display may be any combination of drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, sculptures, or design pieces.

All two-dimensional display pieces such as drawings, photos and paintings on paper should be matted, framed and ready to be hung with a wire securely fastened to the frame. Canvas paintings should also be simply framed and ready to be hung. Two-dimensional framed pieces should not exceed 18x24 inches. Two-dimensional display works that are not appropriately framed and/or ready for hanging will not be accepted. Sculptures should not exceed 3 feet in height.

Works are to be submitted on Friday, March 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the  library gallery at 18 Main St.

Judging, which will occur on Saturday, March 29, will be conducted by a panel of artists. The students' work will be judged according to the following criteria: technical skill in the mediums used, variety across the works in medium, style, and subject matter, originality of expression, overall manner of presentation.

Up to $2,500 will be awarded in scholarships. Each award will be sent directly to the institution after the student recipient has successfully completed one full term of art studies in school and presents an official copy of his or her transcript to the league demonstrating that he or she is in good standing and is registered for the following term of study.

The Art League is a nonprofit organization with nearly 200 members from the Berkshires and beyond. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
