Stockbridge Chamber Elects Officers

STOCKBRIDGE - The Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce elected a new slate of officers during the annual dinner held at Wheatleigh on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Barbara Zanetti, executive director of the chamber, said  Michele Kotek was elected president of the board of directors for a two-year term. Koteck is the innkeeper for the Red Lion Inn, where she has worked for the Fitzpatrick family for 12 years. She grew up in New Lebanon, N.Y., and now lives in Lee with her husband, Bill, and daughter, Isabella.

Other officers elected for the 2008-2009 term include Vice President Allison Rachele Bayles of Berkshire Theatre Fesitval; Assistant Vice President John Parker of Berkshire Botanical Garden; Treasurer Douglas Goudey of Wheeler & Taylor Inc., Secretary Michael Duffy of Norman Rockwell Museum and Member-at-Large John Hart of Berkshire Brochure Display.

Resigning from a two-year term as president was Marty Gottron of One Main B&B and Wordwise Editorial Consultants. Gottron was honored for her commitment to area businesses and the overall well-being of Stockbridge. Also leaving the board after serving 13 years was Len Schiller of the Inn at Stockbridge.

The 100-member chamber is an advocate for Stockbridge area business. Each year, it sponsors such programs as the Stockbridge Scholarship Fund, the Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas event, the Arts & Crafts Show held each summer at the Berkshire Botanical Garden, and the Stockbridge Children's Halloween Parade & Party held at the Plain School. In addition, the chamber produces the widely distributed town brochure, offers a lodging availability hot-line service, and responds to all inquires made to the office located at 50 Main St.

Its next business meeting is Wednesday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and hear the chamber’s 2008 goals and annual budget. The meeting is open to members and their employees. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
