Snowy New Year's Day Forecast

Berkshire County residents woke to snow-covered trees.
NORTH ADAMS - Another foot of snow is expected to fall across the Berkshires on New Year's Day. The new storm is expected to begin with light flurries by mid-morning, picking up steam into the afternoon. Higher elevations could see a more than a foot of snow while at least 6 inches will fall across the Albany, N.Y., area and the Berkshires. The first storm moved into the area on Sunday evening, dropping 6 to 10 inches across the Berkshires and Southern Vermont by Monday morning. By late morning, most major roads in Northern Berkshire were clear as temperatures hovered above freezing. Schools were still closed Monday for the holiday vacation week, although a number of preschools and activities were canceled in the Capital District. Inches of light fluffy snow coated trees and building throughout the region and took down power lines at Jiminy Peak Ski Resort, forcing the popular ski area to open nearly 3 1/2 hours late. Power was restored at about noon and the ski area reported 8 inches of new snow. The skiing on the mountain ends at 10 tonight but a parade and fireworks to celebrate the New Year begins at 10:15 p.m. Cities and towns in the Berkshires prohibit parking on the streets overnight during the winter so snowplow drivers can do their jobs. During the last storm a few weeks ago, several cars had to be towed out of the way, said Public Safety Commissioner E. John Morocco at the time. Police had to knock on doors to get other residents to move their vehicles. Residents are advised not to park in the streets today. Tomorrow's storm will be followed by a dip in the temperatures, possibly into the single digits. Believe it or not, temperatures are expected to soar back into the 40s, if not the 50s, by next weekend. Only in New England. This article is an updated version of the original Dec. 29 posting.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
