IS183 Art School Now in Pittsfield

- December 17, 2007

STOCKBRIDGE - IS183 Art School is offering a variety of new programs in Pittsfield this winter, beginning in January. In response to increased demand, IS183 has developed the following programs in order to increase art-making opportunities to Central County.

IS183 and the Lichtenstein Center in Pittsfield have combined their efforts in order to launch some new art classes at the center.

For kids: IS183 will kick off the season with "Clay Adventures," a free art-making session on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10 to noon, with ceramic artist Nancy Magnusson. It is one of the many popular classes offered by IS183's Making Art Together series. Children of all ages are invited to attend but must be accompanied by an adult.

Preschoolers: Three Saturday morning classes with faculty artist Karen Arp-Sandel will begin on Feb. 28. Arp-Sandel offers preschoolers and caregivers a chance to create art in various mediums.

For teens: Students who are looking to develop a portfolio for admission to college and/or art school may want to take advantage of the portfolio development class offered by faculty artist Michael Rousseau. Rousseau, a Pittsfield native, has returned to his hometown after completing his master's of fine arts at Rhode Island School of Design and teaching high school art in Burlington, Vt., for several years. The class size is limited so that students may get individualized attention.

For adults:

"Intro to Watercolor Painting" with Arp-Sandel runs for six weeks beginning on Jan. 15. Each class will introduce different aspects of the medium through exercises and interesting projects.

Jason Houston will present "Digital Photography: Next Steps" on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27. This two-session course is for those students who would like to move beyond the auto setting and take control of the of the digital process. Houston will focus on sing a SLR type camera.

"Learning through Arts@Morningside Community School"

Starting Jan. 24, third-graders at Morningside will take part in a free, eight-week pilot course, "Learning Math through Printmaking." This fall, IS183 launched the program with "Learning American History through Ceramics" with a group of fifth-grade students from Morningside. On March 20, the course will culminate with an art opening of the students' work. This event is free and open to the public.

This program will offer the Morningside pupils a new way of thinking about mathematical concepts through printmaking and the opportunity to work in the art school's facility in Stockbridge.
