FLORIDA - Dozens of excited schoolchildren will be boarding buses to Albany, N.Y., this evening, as the Gabriel Abbott Memorial School "Gator Singers" head out for a special performance.
Slated to perform the national anthem at the 7 p.m. Albany River Rats hockey game tonight, members of the school's chorus will be making their big stage debut.
"We've never performed outside the school before," said Jennifer Orsini, a second-grade teacher at Gabriel Abbott and the chorus' supervisor. "A lot of these kids play in youth hockey leagues and they're really excited to get out there and be a part of it."
Formed three years ago, the chorus has 39 active members and is composed primarily of second- through fifth-graders. The Gator Singers only recently settled on a name, taking a poll after being selected to perform at the Times Union Center tonight.
The Gators, also the name of the Gabriel Abbott mascot, are making singing a popular activity at the school, according to Orsini, who has seen the group flourish over the last few years.
"Each year, the chorus has become a bigger and better thing and the support from the community has been tremendous. It has become such a big part of the school. It really has tailspinned over the last four years," Orisini said.
After the hockey game, the Gator Singers will be preparing for a Veterans Day concert and a special performance at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' "Songs of the Spirit" festival on Dec. 7.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
