NORTH ADAMS – Approximately 80 eighth-grade students will learn what
it's like to go to college on Friday, Oct. 19, when Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts hosts them, their teachers and parents for "Imagine, Dream and Achieve Conte Day at MCLA."
The purpose of the program – being held for the first time this fall – is to introduce local youngsters to college. The joint effort between MCLA, North Adams Superintendent of Schools James Montepare and Conte Middle School Principal Diane Ryczek is in line with the Berkshire Compact for Higher Education’s goals of improving access to higher education. The compact is dedicated to raising the aspirations of all Berkshire County residents to view 16 years or more years of education as the accepted educational norm.
The visit will begin at 2:45 p.m. when the students and about 10 of their teachers will meet with members of MCLA's admissions staff for a tour of the campus, which will include a look at the residence halls. At 4 p.m., they will hear two mini-lectures in Bowman Hall, room 101, from chemistry professor Robert Harris and math professor Christopher Thomas.
The lectures will be followed by a barbecue, when students will be joined by their parents.
The event will continue with a program at 5, when MCLA President Mary K. Grant, Mayor John Barrett III and staff from the offices of admissions and financial aid will speak.
