MCLA President Grant to Lead Education Panel - September 20, 2007
 | | On File | BOSTON - Gov. Deval Patrick has named Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts President Mary. K. Grant to lead an education panel for the Readiness Project Leadership Council.
Patrick unveiled his vision for a comprehensive, child-centered public education system in June. The project will create a 10-year strategic plan to improve public education in the commonwealth from preschool to college and higher education, also to include work-force development and lifelong learning.
According to Patrick, the council will build a long-term plan to guide the state through the next phase of education reform to ensure all children living in the Commonwealth are ready to compete in the global economy. Grant will head the education and technology subcommittee with co-chair Robert Richardson, East Coast education manager of Intel Massachusetts Inc. in Concord. She and Richardson were among the 150 volunteers named last week by Patrick to advise the project’s Leadership Council, which was established last month.
The volunteers will address a variety of issues from a systemic perspective, offering specific recommendations for state action. Those issues include assessment and accountability, curriculum alignment, early education and care, education and technology, expanded teaching and learning time, high school plus, innovative schools, long-term funding, MCAS and assessments, public and private education, recruiting and retaining educators, whole child and UMass and public higher education. The subcommittee members will identify specific state actions and offer cost projections and benchmarks to help move Massachusetts forward in education over the next 10 years.
In addition to the work required for the project to succeed, subcommittee members have agreed to join Patrick at a series of town hall-style meetings between now and the conclusion of the project in late spring. For more information, go to www.mcla.edu |
