Tempers Flare Over Adams Scoreboard

ADAMS - Tempers flared at Wednesday night’s brief meeting of the Board of Selectmen over the still-absent scoreboard at Renfrew Field. During the citizen’s conference, meeting regular Jeffrey Lefebvre again asked about the scoreboard, after bringing the topic to the board's attention at the Aug. 8 meeting. “It’s almost time for the kids to play and there’s no scoreboard, no bleachers and no lines drawn on the field,” said Lefebvre. Chairman Joseph R. Dean Jr. and Town Administrator William Ketcham repeated their previous statements, saying they did not know when the scoreboard would be erected, but they expected to see it before community football season begins in the fall. “We were told there would be a scoreboard in the fall but the town is not responsible for it,” said Dean. A heated exchange between Lefebvre and Dean followed after Lefebvre accused Dean of promising to get a scoreboard and not delivering. “Now, that’s not a fair statement,” said Selectman Donald R. Sommer to Lefebvre. Last week, Parks Supervisor David Nuvallie said the more than $14,000 scoreboard was not in the town’s budget. “We’ve been trying to get one,” said Nuvallie. “I just don’t know where it’s going to come from.” A brand-new scoreboard was anonymously donated this year for the town's Russell Field. That was installed nearly two months ago, said Nuvallie. In Other News The Selectmen voted unanimously to sign and execute the deed for the Jones Block on Park Street. The closing on the sale of the building to Samuel Adams Enterprises LLC is scheduled for Aug. 29. “It took a long time but I’m glad the project is finally moving forward,” said Sommer. “We had to cross some t’s and dot some i’s, but it’s getting there,” said Dean. Moderator Carol Francesconi, left, and Anne Marie Furey were presented flowers in memory of the Rev. William Furey, their brother and husband, respectively. The town report was dedicated to him.
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Town meeting on Monday approved all 35 articles on the annual meeting warrant, including a total spending for fiscal 2027 of more than $8.5 million.

Some 77 of the town's more than 2,500 registered voters filled the Cheshire Community House meeting room, debating on a number of articles during the meeting that lasted nearly three hours

The town dedicated its annual report to the Rev. William David Furey, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church and more recently Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesborough. Furey died last year at age 77.

His wife, Anne Marie Furey, and his sister, Town Moderator Carol Francesconi, were presented with a bouquet of flowers in tribute to him.

He was an exemplary member of the community who left a lasting impression in each and every life that he touched, said Town Clerk Whitney Flynn.

Voters approved several warrant articles that make up an operating budget of $3,840,314 for fiscal 2027. Of this amount, $1,642,481 is allocated for the general government budget, which was approved after clarification of a few questions.

One item was the administrative assistant's salary. Prior to the annual meeting, the town eliminated the executive assistant salary of $54,309 in favor of a part-time administrative assistant salary of $27,155, to reduce costs considering the financial constraint the town is in.
