'62 Center presents a new solo opera by Laurie Anderson

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance will present the acclaimed multimedia artist Laurie Anderson in a new work. Conceived as a series of short mystery plays, Delusion combines violin, electronic puppetry, music, and images to jump-cut between the everyday and the mythic.

Anderson weaves stories in the colorful, poetic and imagistic language that has become her trademark. The performance will be February 26th & 27th at 8 PM on the ’62 Center MainStage, located at 1000 Main Street, in Williamstown, MA.

At the heart of Delusion, which was commission by and will premier at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, is the pleasure of language and a terror that the world is made entirely of words.

Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most renowned - and daring- creative pioneers. She is best known for her multimedia presentations and innovative use of technology. As a writer, director, visual artist and vocalist she has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, and experimental music.

Her recording career, launched by “O Superman” in 1981, includes the soundtrack to her feature film “Home of the Brave” and “Life on a String” (2001). Anderson's live shows range from simple spoken word to elaborate multi-media stage performances such as “Songs and Stories for Moby Dick” (1999). Anderson has published seven books and her visual work has been presented in major museums around the world.

In 2002, Anderson was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA which culminated in her touring solo performance “The End of the Moon”. Recent projects include a series of audio-visual installations and a high definition film, Hidden Inside Mountains, created for World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan. In 2007 she received the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for her outstanding contribution to the arts. She recently completed a two-year worldwide tour of her latest performance piece, “Homeland”, which will be released on Nonesuch Records this year.

Williamstown Planning Board Narrowing in on Subdivision Bylaw Changes

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Planning Board late last month discussed specific features of what it plans to pass as a new subdivision control bylaw this year.
 
The board long has discussed the complex set of regulations as being out of date and cumbersome to both potential developers and the board itself, which has needed to hear requests for waivers of outdated rules for the handful of residential subdivisions that have been proposed in town in recent years.
 
This spring, the town engaged consultants from Northampton's Dodson and Flinker Landscape Architecture and Planning to go through the existing bylaw, compare it to more contemporary regulations in other communities and help craft a revised bylaw.
 
Unlike the zoning bylaw, where amendments require approval of town meeting, the subdivision control bylaw is a creation of the Planning Board, which can make changes on its own after a public hearing process it hopes to complete this year.
 
At a special Planning Board meeting on May 26, Dillon Sussman of Dodson and Flinker and his colleagues walked the board through a dozen different decision points that the board must resolve — either by leaving the bylaw as is or making a change — and offered suggestions based on best practices.
 
All of the issues are technical and ranged from the fundamental, like how the bylaw will define types of subdivisions, to the highly specific, like what turning radii will be required in new streets that are constructed to serve planned developments.
 
One example of a topic that came up in the recent approval of a four-home subdivision off Summer Street is stormwater management.
