Pittsfield - Barrington Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Producing Director Richard M. Parison Jr., announces open Equity auditions for men “This Wonderful Life”

Auditions will held on Saturday, October 18th from 10:00am – 6:00pm at BSC’s Stage 2 at the VFW Hall, 36 Linden Street in Pittsfield.

This Wonderful Life is a one-man stage adaptation of It’s a Wonderful Life. Join George Bailey, Clarence the Angel, Old Man Potter, Mary and ZuZu Bailey and 20 more of Bedford Falls’ finest citizens in this unique theatrical twist on Frank Capra’s timeless film. Bursting with hope and humor, wry observation and heartfelt homage, This Wonderful Life reminds us of the power of friendship and family…the perfect holiday gift.

Men in their late 30’s will be seen for the role of Narrator described as tallish, with an All-American feeling about him. He must have a great facility with good mimicry skills (Jimmy Stewart is a must), and a love for the movie It's A Wonderful Life. He should look as if he is a family man, a great comic sense and good physical comedian with an ability to show joy and despair but not be maudlin. All are invited to audition. Those auditioning should bring a headshot and resume, and be prepared to read from sides provided at the audition.

Rehearsals will begin November 18, 2008 and performances will run December 3 through 20.

Performers must commit to the rehearsal schedule (Tuesday through Sunday -- Rehearsals will held during daytime hours and perhaps some evening hours) and performance schedule (Wednesday through Sunday, October 3 through 20). This Wonderful Life will be directed by Andrew Volkoff.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
