The company assembles its repertory from renowned international and Swedish choreographers such as Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Ulysses Dove, Örjan Andersson, and Kenneth Kvarnström. This season’s exclusive program includes Cicada, a world premiere by Cristina Caprioli; the U.S. premiere of Apartment and Pas de danse by iconic choreographer Mats Ek; and Castrati by Nacho Duato, with music by Vivaldi.
“Stockholm 59° North gives a shot in the arm to international contemporary ballet,” comments Ella Baff, Executive Director at Jacob’s Pillow. “These Royal Swedish dancers are impeccably trained and can perform any classical work. But with this special company, they choose to do something different and exciting, with masters such as Mats Ek, and a new generation of choreographers like Cristina Caprioli. They are unique in all ways.”
Cicada, a world premiere by Italian-born Swedish choreographer Cristina Caprioli, situates movement and music in counterpoint set to a score by South African composer Kevin Volans. The movement is bold and swift, showcasing the virtuosic talent of the dancers en pointe. Caprioli’s work is known for its clarity and musicality and frequent explorations of the geometry of the body. In addition to creating original work for Stockholm 59° North, Caprioli teaches at the Swedish University College of Dance in Stockholm. In 2006, she was awarded the distinguished Cullberg Prize, named after critically acclaimed Swedish choreographer Birgit Cullberg.
