LANESBORO - On Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m., St. Luke's of Lanesboro will host an organ recital by Edwin Lawrence at the Old Stone Church on Rt. 7. The organ at the church, built by William A. Johnson of Westfield, Massachusetts in 1862, remains unchanged. The tonal palette is the same as heard then, and the wind pressure to the pipes is still created by hand pumping.

Edwin Lawrence is the Minister of Music for the First Congregational Church of Williamstown and an adjunct instructor of keyboard instruments and music theory at Williams College. A resident of Bennington Vermont, he has been the conductor of the Bennington County Choral Society for more than 30 years. He was a founding member of the Consortium of Vermont Composers in 1985, and was cited by the Vermont Council of the Arts in 1990 for his contributions to the vitality of the arts in the Green

Mr. Lawrence's program will include music for small organ by Dietrich Buxtehude J.S. Bach and Hugo Distler, the centenary of whose birth is being celebrated this year. As a special feature, the program will also include music by composers who were active in New England at the time the Lanesboro organ was built George Whitefield Chadwick studied in Germany and was instrumental in establishing the New England Conservatory of Music on his return to Boston. Dudley Buck and Eugene Thayer were well-respected recitalists of the day. Both knew how to please audiences, and were much m demand to dedicate new instruments. Buck traveled from his Hartford, Connecticut home to play recitals throughout New England, including several in Berkshire County, and Thayer, while maintaining a Boston studio, even journeyed into nearby Vermont.

The Old Stone Church of St. Luke’s Church is located on the west side of Rt. 7 in the town of Lanesboro, MA. Parking is available along the road. The building is fully handicap accessible. A free will offering to benefit the organ preservation fund will be collected. For more information call 413-443-0165.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
