PITTSFIELD - Nathan Bech, (R West Springfield) candidate for the 1st congressional district of Massachusetts, will have the chance to throw out the first pitch in the Pittsfield Dukes baseball game versus the Lowell All Americans, Wednesday, July 16. The game begins at 7 p.m.

The Pittsfield Dukes are a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The NECBL is a summer collegiate wooden bat league, established to provide college baseball players from around the country the opportunity to sharpen their skills through competitive action while the players are on their summer recess from schooling. The Pittsfield Dukes play at Wahconah Park, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Pittsfield is also the birthplace of college baseball and the site of the earliest reference to Baseball.

Bech, a veteran from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, jumped at the opportunity to support the local New England Collegiate Baseball League. "Every American should be eager to do two things: support our troops and watch baseball, the American pastime," Bech said.

Bech, a competitive runner at West Springfield High School and at the US Army's Defense Language Institute, said he understands how important it is for these athletes to stay tuned up in the offseason.  "It is also great for the fans;" Bech says "They get a chance to see theses kids play before they make it big."  The Bech campaign invites any one interested in watching some exciting summer college baseball to take advantage of free tickets, provided by the Committee to Elect Nathan Bech. If interested, please contact Peter Giftos at the Berkshire County Republican Association, 413-448-8100.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
