MCLA’s Green Living Seminar to feature Bruce Harley

As part of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Green Living Seminar, Bruce Harley, technical director of Conservation Services Group, will speak in Sullivan Lounge in the Amsler Campus Center at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, February 7, 2006. The title of his talk is "Our homes, Our lives, Our world: Choices in home construction methods and impacts on human health and the environment." Harley is a recognized expert on energy efficient residential construction and retrofit. As Technical Director of Conservation Services Group, he is involved in research, policy development, design consulting, and building codes development. Since 1990, he has had hands-on experience with diagnosis and repair of air leakage, HVAC systems, combustion safety, indoor air quality, and moisture. Harley has conducted hundreds of seminars on energy efficient residential construction, energy codes, building science, and mechanical systems. His book, Insulate and Weatherize, was published in September 2002 by The Taunton Press, and he has been a regular contributor to Fine Homebuilding, The Journal of Light Construction and Energy Design Update. Harley’s presentation is the second in MCLA's Green Living Seminar, "From personal decisions to large scale conservation efforts: an introduction to the diverse stewards of the environment." The aim of this series is to inform the community about the ways that environmental conservation can be achieved through individual actions in combination with larger scale environmental efforts. Presentations are free and open to the public. Each presentation and will last approximately one hour, and light refreshments will be provided. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
