Mildred E. Smith, 95

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Mildred Elizabeth Smith, 95, of 85 Eagle St., St. Joseph's Court, beloved matriarch of the Smith and Dowling families, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Williamstown Commons. Born in Adams on March 23, 1917, daughter of Leonard F. and Mabel Martin Dowling, she attended North Adams schools and graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School. She also graduated from the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. A registered nurse, Mrs. Smith was employed by North Adams Regional Hospital from 1944 until retiring on Jan. 1, 1980, spending her last 15 years as the hospital's head nurse. She was first employed at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and later at the former Plunkett Hospital in Adams. She was a communicant of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Court Tenants Association and a former member of the American and Massachusetts nurses associations. Her husband, Colbert Smith, whom she married on June 16, 1945, died on April 15, 1998. She leaves her daughter, Maureen Smith and her husband, Tony Phillips, of Medford; Kevin Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Plain, Wash.; three grandchildren, Harvey Shepard of Stuart, Fla., Shaemus Shepard of Providence, R.I., and Brenna Smith of Plain; a son-in-law, Wayne Shepard of North Adams, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Kathleen Shepard and her sisters Margaret Bleau and Alice Babula. FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Smith will be Friday, July 27, at 10:15 a.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 26, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Williamstown Commons Activities Fund or All Saints Meals on Wheels Program in care of the funeral home.
